there are plenty of 5mp cameras that out-do 8mp cameras because the lens quality isnt all that great, so until we see test shots of both, you cant really answer that.
also, this "reality" display sony is bragging about would have been great, if the resolution was a bit higher, motorola got the right idea and bumped up the res on the atrix which is great because when your on the internet or browsing photos, things just look a lot better.
the arc does win when it comes to current OS. being on 2.3 is prefered imo.
the quality of materials is unknown to you since neither have been reviewed. but if its quality you want, the specs say that the atrix has gorilla glass display, ill take that over sony's "scratch resistant" surface any day.
the battery life on standby isnt great for the atrix, but the arc lost that match in the talk time, having 2 hours less than the 9hr talk time for the atrix
dont know much about the sony media service, but im sure most people are fine with netflix and what not.
sound quality wont be known until they are reviewed.
the atrix is dual core, and its battery life is pretty damn good if it can have 9 hours of talk time, if you really need more then i might suggest a land line.
the 1080p viewing does make a difference because if i want to load a high res movie from my computer, i wont be able to watch it on the arc since it wont be able to play such a high res file, and ill have to go through the trouble to download a new file with lower resolution. so, the atrix actually benefits in more ways than one to have that ability.
people who have seen the atrix say its been smooth too so, not much of an argument there, i'd say to wait till both phones have been released and reviewed to judge smoothness. and also, the 1GB does matter, it means you'll have more ram left over on boot ups which imo is always handy and welcome.

I used to be a moto fan but after seeing the new Sony Ericsson arc, let me tell you moto is really rubbish and ugly. I know the specs are good but moto is battery is very bad and the support of the company is not good.
Many moto phones are still in 1.5 and 1.6 version. So that's the reason Im leaving moto and it's time to have a real smart phone like the se xperia arc.

SE Xperia Arc over motorola atrix -
A great 8mpx camera with Sony's award winning Exmor R sensor, led flash, autofocus, smile detection, face detection, image stabilization, video stabilization as compared to poor 5mpx camera of atrix without anything.
Great 4.2 inch LED backlit Reality display with Sony's great Mobile Bravia Engine as compared to poor old gen simple LCD display of atrix.
SE's great customization(timescape /mediapane) as compared to one of the worst motorola customization(motoblur).
Android 2.3 preloaded as compared to old 2.2 in atrix.
Almost double battery life(460hr) as compared to atrix's poor 250 hr standby time.
Extremely slim at 8.7 mm as compared to atrix.
Unique & the sexiest ever design in touchscreen phones as compared to ugly iphone copycat design of atrix.
Body made from premium materials as compared to poor quality body materials of atrix.
Arc will be very soon connected with Sony's Qriocity media on demand service as compared to nothing on atrix.
SE has always been great in sound quality but motorola sucks. Therefore much better sound quality in Arc as compared to atrix.
Motorola atrix has dual core processor but I don't care about it unless I get at least good battery life. Atrix has much better internal memory but it doesn't matter anymore in Arc bcoz we can save apps & games directly to memory card in android 2.3
1080p video playback is possible in atrix but it doesn't create any diff. until we have a screen with comparable resolution.
Atrix has 1GB RAM but it doesn't matter bcoz Arc is giving a ultimately smooth experience with 512 MB RAM(as reported by everyone who has previewed Arc)

Motorola has always produced groundbreaking phones(as expected from a company which has brought the world the mobile phone concept).
But the main problem was that the after-sales was pathetic. I am writing this from India, and Motorola is nearly wiped out from here is only because its awful services. Hope moto will fix this.
On spec wise, this is far better than Arc, or anything else in the market. But I still go for Arc since atleast, they have good after sales service here.

1GB ram is really eye opener . And dual core processor , come on motorola , my laptop i bought in 2007 is only dual core
can't wait to see what HTC, samsung ,sony , and apple , [hopefully:(] nokia ...brings to stand up to this big bad boy
