Minu, 22 Apr 20212005 phone with 1995 ringtones. Tragic.Someone complained about this 2005 phone having "1995 ringtones". I frankly don't see what is so wrong with this type of ringtone generator. The ringing noise-making element in this phone is a magnetic buzzer, it is driven with a digital square wave signal, hence the ringing capability is monophonic only. But so what? For anyone who wishes to produce his or her own aftermarket firmware to run on this phone, this simple ringing design is a good thing - there are other phones from the same timeframe that make ringing sounds by way of a MIDI player chip instead, and because there is no documentation for those exotic chips, aftermarket firmwares on those other phone models lack the ability to ring. But C139 ringer is driven by the main Calypso chip's built-in buzzer output, hence we as in the hacker community know how to make it ring.

It IS possible to develop new aftermarket firmware for this C139 model - but the big catch is, you have to develop it yourself, no one else will do it for you. Naturally, a very special skill set is required for such a job.
There are two qualities that make this C139 model special: (1) it has TI Calypso chipset inside, which is the only classic GSM dumbphone chipset for which the worldwide hacker community possesses sufficient documentation and reference source code to make indie firmware design possible, and (2) the super-low-end nature of this C139 model translates into hardware simplicity, such that there is very little model-specific extra hardware beyond the core chipset. It is only thanks to these unique qualities that creation of viable aftermarket firmware for C139 becomes possible.
So far two different teams have produced working aftermarket firmware for C139: in chronological order, first OsmocomBB, then FreeCalypso. I am the author of the latter. However, neither project has yet produced an aftermarket fw version that is practically usable as a phone, with an end user hat on - so far a phone converted to either of the two aftermarket firmwares works only as a toy, not as an end user phone. More precisely, it's a toy that does connect to live GSM networks, makes and receives calls, sends and receives SMS - just not in a practically usable manner, as of yet.

My very first phone overall. It was silver and I got it from tracfone......and guess what?
I still have it and it still works. There is no service though and it has about 13 mins left but I keep it for sentimental value.

Got this as a gophone in '07 through Rshack, after idle for 2yrs they can't revive to use it(cingular) they say. Any way to use as pay as you go with any provider??
