Anonymous, 03 Dec 2009Coming Motorola phones: 1. Moto Genghis 2. Moto Z12 3. Moto... moreA field emission display (FED)
is a flat panel display technology
that uses large-area field
electron sources to provide
electrons that strike colored
phosphor to produce a color
image. In a general sense, a FED
consists of a matrix of cathode
ray tubes, each tube producing a
single sub-pixel, grouped in
threes to form red-green-blue
(RGB) pixels.
FEDs combine the advantages of
CRTs, namely their high contrast
levels and very fast response
times, with the packaging
advantages of LCD and other flat
panel technologies. They also
offer the possibility of requiring
less power, about half that of an
LCD system. To date, however,
manufacturing problems have
prevented any FED system from
entering commercial production.

      First pictures of Motorola
      Z12 ZiNe with Symbian UIQ?
If all the info about the upcoming
      phones the Czech site Mobile.cz
is bringing us, checks out next
      week, call me really impressed.
Just yesterday they’ve got us the
goods on the first true Nokia N95
      competitor – Samsung SGH-G810
      phone.
Today they seem to have the
      pictures of the long rumored
      upcoming Motorola Z12
      multimedia smartphone, that has
      been going under the Scarven
      nickname for a while now.
To tell the truth, the picture
      itself is not too clear.
But, while the phone on the left is
clearly Z8 and the one in the
middle is Moto Z10, the one to the
right is different from them both.
It also has the bigger display and
      touchscreen controls.
      Earlier rumors already told us
that Scarven Z12 will come in the
same form factor as Z8 and Z10.
So, I’m inclined to believe that
this could really be Motorola ZiNe
Z12 , running Symbian UIQ OS.
Previous rumors had it, that Z12
      will have built-in GPS and Wi-Fi, 5
or 8 megapixel camera and 2.8″
      16M color VGA resolution
      touchscreen.
      With yeasterdays Motorola PR
      teaser, that sounds about right.
Another N95 rival in the making?
      Update: The picture above
seems to have come from Mobile-
      Review forums. It appeared there
      shortly and was quickly removed.
From MRF and Dutch site GSM
help desk (the guys who first
brought us news about Scarven) I
was able to piece some additional
info on Motorola ZiNe Z12 :
MOTO Z12 ZiNE does not have a
      full touchscreen. Instead, the
screen is divided into two parts,
with the bottom part featuring a
      touch sensitive slip for phone
      controls. The kick-slider keypad
is used for the other functions.
      Yesterdays teaser was indeed
      about Z12, which will have a 16M
      color VGA resolution 2.8″
display, the quality of which goes
well beyond anything we are used
      to in mobile handsets.
The phone will come with 5
      megapixel camera and (maybe,
but not likely) 3x optical zoom.
Motorola Z12 is not positioned as
      a camera phone, touting
      multimedia smarphone features
      instead.
There will be a stand alone
      camera phone presented as well.
      It’s a candybar with with 5
      megapixel Kodak lenses,
      previously known under the
      codename X-Pixl.
That’s about it for now. I’ll keep
you posted as the new info
      trickles in.

The Motorola Droid went live as Verizon (NYSE: VZ)’s first Android phone earlier this morning. Then, Google announced that their Google Maps app for Android 2.0 now supports GPS turn-by-turn directions with voice guidance. The two announcements merged, like that those really big storms in that one movie involving a fishing boat of some sort, to form one of the biggest product launches of the year. I just got a chance to put my hands all over the Motorola Droid and thought I’d let you in on my initial impressions (and from-the-hip pics). The short version: Verizon’s Motorola Droid is badass. Keep reading for the long version (and a massive hands-on photo gallery

First, the Motorola Droid is slim – 13.7mm, to be exact. You’re probably not used to seeing a QWERTY slider as svelte as the keyboard-less iPhone 3GS, so the slim-waisted Droid is a pleasant surprise. Unfortunately, all that thinness comes with sacrifices. The keyboard is decent, but the keys are almost completely flat and don’t offer too much travel. Thankfully, there’s a satisfyingly tactile “click” to the keys that makes the keyboard quite usable. It’s also good to see the top row sporting numeric alternatives and a dedicated “@” key.

The Droid is pretty. The little stub that extends below the bottom of the screen might look a bit awkward in photos, but in person the Droid is one attractive smartphone. Navigation buttons are flush mounted, making for clean look. The Droid’s sharp lines and modern industrial design remind me of Motorola’s glory days when the RAZR’s innovative design reigned king in the mobile phone market. And, with a soft-touch backside, the Droid is as pretty as it is fun to hold

As for features and specs, the Droid is one power-packed handset. It’s got more than enough processing power to run its Android 2.0 OS without any noticeable lag or stuttering. Screen rotations execute without hesitation and menus pop up nice and fast. The 5-megapixel camera is impressive, as is the dual-LED flash and HD video recording at 24fps. The one video recording that I saw demonstrated on the Droid looked crisp and smooth, even at less than 30fps. The huge 3.7-inch capacitive touchscreen is bright and responsive. Then there’s the microSD card slot pre-loaded with a 16GB microSD card. Can you say multimedia monster?

Google Maps Navigation is awesome (our video demo here). There’s a reason Garmin’s stock dropped through the floor this morning. Not only does Google provide turn-by-turn GPS navigation with voice prompts, the Google Maps Navigation feature allows you to overlay all kinds of data layers on top of your route – you can view traffic along your specific route, or you can find nearby gas stations, or Hilton hotels, or burger joints, or convenience stores, or… you get the idea. And, the ability to view your navigation route on top of Google Maps’ satellite view is amazing. There’s even a street view mode that gives you a look at what the upcoming turn looks like in real life!

The mythical Motorola (NYSE: MOT) Sholes tablet is starting to become reality. Since before the launch of the Android-powered Motorola Droid and its slide-out QWERTY keyboard, we’ve been hearing rumors that Motorola has a slate-style (tablet) variant in the works – the Sholes tablet. We’ve been dying to see what the presumably thinner, more powerful candybar Droid/Sholes would look lie, and today we’re happy to say that we’ve been given a glimpse of the upcoming Android phone.

Thanks to Mobile01, we now know that the Motorola Sholes tablet picks up where the Droid left off. It’s got the same 3.7-inch 854 x 480 touchscreen, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a robot-chic design aesthetic. Taking things a bit further, we learn that the Sholes sports an 8-megapixel autofocusing camera, HDMI-out port, a TI OMAP 3430 Cortex A8 processor possibly clocked at 800Mhz, multi-touch support and Motorola’s Crystal Talk DSP call enhancement technology. We’re also expecting the Sholes to launch next year with the latest Android 2.1 OS on board, possibly on T-Mobile (NYSE: DT)’s US network.

For those of you not paying attention, the Motorola Sholes will apparently feature an HDMI output port capable of pushing HD video (at least 720p resolution, possibly 1080p) to external displays. As if the generous 3.7-inch touchscreen wasn’t enough, Motorola’s Sholes will allow you to watch your videos in its full HD glory on your TV or computer monitor .

Stay tuned for details on this upcoming Android monster!
