Motorola Q4 financial report is out: Things are getting better

31 January, 2010

Motorola published their Q4 and full 2009 financial reports, which shows quite clear signs that the company is getting back on its feet. They have earned 142 million US dollars in Q4, which has brought down the total loss for the year 2009 to only 51 million dollars. Now compare those to the 3.7 billion dollars that Motorola lost in Q4 2008 and 4.2 billion loss for the whole 2008 and you see our point.

Unfortunately the mobile division is still struggling to make some profit. Motorola shipped 12 million handsets in Q4, 2 million of which were smartphones and generated 1.8 billion US dollars of income. That did help it reduce the operating loss to 132 million dollars (compared to 595 million in Q4 2008) but they still need to improve their results to actually start earning some money. We guess a few more devices of the MILESTONE kind should do the trick just fine.

For the full year 2009, sales of the mobile division were 7.1 billion US dollars, compared to 12.1 billion in 2008. It incurred an operating loss of 1.1 billion US dollars, compared to an operating loss of 2.2 billion in 2008. The company estimated market share is barely 3.7 percent.
