C3po, 15 Nov 2008Its not just brand loyalty, why should i buy a E8 when i ca... moreOf course the E8 loses to the N81. But do these phones have the same target market? Hell no. N81 is a smartphone, while the E8 is not. The N81 is made for multimedia and feature-savvy people, while the E8 appeals to music lovers who only want basic features.

Also, who cares if your Über high tech N81 or i450 has loaded features like 3G, WiFi, 5 MP camera, etc.? NOT EVERYONE NEEDS THOSE FEATURES. Come on, only about 30 percent of all the people in the world who own a 3G phone actually do video-calling and surf the net using their phones. Not everyone understands the mechanisms of such features. Does everyone actually print photos in full page to take advantage of their 5 megapixel cameras with Carl-Zeiss lens and Xenon flash?

Come on, PLEASE STOP judging phones because they lack this or that. These phones have their own target audience and obviously only a minority of all the people in the world exactly know these stuff. Your N81 is entirely different from my E8. It's no use comparing an apple to an orange.

If everyone wants to have all the features they want in their phones, then they are NOT WORTHY to be called "phones". These should be called multimedia devices, wherein they excel at everything but their original purpose as phones become so clouded that things such as calling and texting will be obsolete and useless. If you keep commenting that the E8 ore any other phone has none of the features like that, then why are you not bashing other phones like the 3210, V3 and many other simple phones?

On the contrary, the simplest phones sell the biggest because these appeal to the mass market. The RAZR V3, lacking most features like a memory card slot, sold more than 100 million units and the Nokia 2100 (?) soled more than 200 million units.

jjsoviet, 15 Nov 2008Brand Consciousness is what's killing the market these days... moreIts not just brand loyalty, why should i buy a E8 when i can get a Samsung i450 or NOKIA N81 at a little bit more and get far better hardware with impressive specs, with amazing sound quality, and LOADS of software out there for them. My N81 simply crushes this little E8 in everything, yet N81 is not that much more expensive.

Brand Consciousness is what's killing the market these days. Just because it's from some popular brand it is already guaranteed a hit. Not every big name has a big reputation. If brands were nonexistent today, I'm sure there will be an equilibrium in today's market.

Im having a great time laughing at some of the comments here. The E8 may have great sound quality but its missing so many basics for a modern Multimedia device such as:
                        Wi-Fi
                        3G
                        Large screen
And loads of 3rd party apps.
E8 is missing these. Why get a E8 when you can get a NOKIA N81 which also has Wi-Fi, 3G, A nice large 2.4inch 16M colour screen, Symbian S60 fp1 with tons of software available, amazing sound quality, powerful CPU, very long battery life, and loads of entertainment in one, it stomps all over the E8.

This is based on my observation:2002-2004, Moto was the world's number 1.Then came Nokia models such as 5110, 5210,3210 all of these were -user-friendly and...with different colourful and cheap housing and covers. Those were a hit!!!

Name Moto models that come with customizable looks?

Hello, good day to all Moto fans here. I'm totally agreeable to the last few remarks posted on the topic of Moto's marketing. I know the first RAZR V3 made its name worldwide when it first came out and that's even without Crystal Talk. As most of us already knew, Moto suffered last few years due to being complacent BUT being a true Moto fan, I was still using Moto phones then. When the RAZR2 V8 came out and in small print, stated that it has built-in Crystal Talk technology, I was impressed, bought it and now using using E8. Many people in my country are constantly looking out at SEs and Nokia, some on Samsung & LGs. I asked the shops why and they said they find it easier to sell these brands as people asked for them so somehow these brands did pretty good job from the marketing point of view. 100 Moto's right, more exposures or ads on Crystal Talk will definitely help as this is one feature lots of people are not aware of. Crystal Talk technology is also one of my priority in my list when selecting a phone now. I've seen an ad/short clip in youtube from ivoice pro bluetooth headset. They fully utilized the short time to project the noise cancellation feature in this headset. After watching it, I went further by checking the unit up at various shops and did some readings, finally found out that a Taiwanese company probably bought over certain rights to copy and produce this headset from Jawbone, one of the best rated headset now. I'm using Moto H12 headset for about 8 months now and are very happy with it, at the time of my purchase, H12 was the only headset that comes with Crystal Talk. So moral of the story, if Moto just need to spend so little money to make the first step & do more road shows on Crystal Talk, I believe people will slowly come back to them - hopefully not too late as I'm sure other phone makers will surely come up with something similar in the near future. Imagine this, VOIP headsets have similar technology, so are bluetooth headsets, even walkie talkies. If Nokia or SE were to come up with similar technologies, Motorola will once again loses out even though Motorola was the first one to introduce this kind of technology due to Moto's current position in the mobile phone market even though Moto's on its way climbing up the ranking again. Sometimes I can only feel sympathetic to the brand we all love with good design, good technology but not many people know it. So I hope should any Motorola staff or management people reading this could convey our feedbacks to someone up there & do something fast about it - before it's too late. One thing for sure, I'll continue to use Motorola phones that come with Crystal Talk, even my wife's impressed with it (after testing the Moto's Crystal Talk in noisy environment) and most likely I'll be getting a Motorola for her soon and another competitive brand will then lose one more of their loyal customer.

IMO. The key of Motorola success should be is in Marketing Team and Advertisment. Motorola Indonesia is really lame Marketing Team and Advertisment.

Definitely agreed. The Motorola E8 may not be that famous since it's not a "Walkman"or "XpressMusic" brand but if ever people realize the results of the SMAPE tests, they'll be shocked.

Many people is brand minded. Like in my country in Indonesia; people in here always thinking Nokia is user friendly but the fact is same complicated menus, and because Sony brand, people thinking have great for any feature. In this case Middle End and High End. Many brand has brain washed to make people believe a "Walkman" or "XpressMusic" is the best.

For other brands, I'm sure they must have some kind of commission/subsidies to the carriers / phone shops to promote their handsets, but not Moto.

To me, Moto's marketing team (from my observation in both US & HK) doesn't seem to know how to promote the best out of the phones.

I.e. Moto could of easily promote its Crystal Talk technology by having TV ads featuring one can communicate clearly in noisy environment, though I have not seen anything like that at all. Best I "heard" was an ad on radio regarding Crystal Talk..where they just "talk" about it.

Why can't Moto have TV ads like cars (not in terms of the fancy stuff, but the messages like...according to xxx survey/test, Moto out performs other brands in terms of....)

The ads in mainland China are a bit better, as I've seen some good and fancy and attractive ones regarding V8, which really makes quite a lot of people buy Moto there.
