Neonode promises WLAN mobile soon

Neonode announced that a new mobile supporting Wireless LAN (WLAN) is under development in cooperation with Philips Semiconductors. The device still has no name and the planned availability is the second half of this year. Lets hope that it wont be delayed as much as the first Neonode phone – N1.

While away from a wireless network the new device will function as a regular GSM phone, but if there is a WLAN within the range, the users will be able to talk for free (excluding the charge for the WLAN of course) even for the international calls, and surf the net with speeds a lot higher that even the 3G networks can provide. The transfer speed will be up to 11 Mbit per second, which is about 25 times faster than 3G networks and about 11 times faster than Bluetooth.

“This is nothing but a telecom revolution. The WLAN expansion takes place everywhere in an explosive speed and offers real broadband to a small expense, which often already is covered by the user’s fixed broadband subscription!” says Thomas Eriksson, founder and CTO Neonode.

The phones that currently support WLAN are Nokia 9500, Motorola MPx and recently announced Samsung i750.
