Samsung announcements galore

The list of the just announced phones by Samsung at Cebit 2004 is quite long - P710, P730, E800, E810, D710, i500, X900, X910, E300 and C110.

The new P730 offers a 1 megapixel camera with imaging focus, digital zoom for close-up images, pause controls along with seven quality choices for still recording. The innovative twist-and-flip design as seen in Samsung P400 handset allows users to take photographs when the unit is opened vertically and also when the LCD is rotated to a horizontal position. Picture quality is enhanced with a significantly high-resolution QVGA-size (240x320 pixels) recording and playback for moving images with a maximum continuous recording time of about 100 minutes. Recorded images can also be used as LCD wallpaper placed on the 262,236-color TFD screen.

The P730 handset incorporates an internal memory of 64 MB RAM, which can be increased up to 512 MB with the addition of MMS slot. The mobile device has 64-tone polyphonic ringtones and MP3 Player included. It measures 45 x 94 x 24.5 mm and weighs 123 g. The P730 is to be launched in Europe in Q3 2004.

The SGH-E800 and SGH-E810 slide-up camera phones are designed for ease-of-use and instant access to the latest in advanced mobile features. Both feature VGA (640 x 480 pixels) camera with 4x digital zoom and flash light for vivid, true-colour images as well as 1.72-inch wide screen 65,536 colour TFT running at 128 x 160 pixels, giving users bright and clear images.

The E800 is lightweight (86g) and compact (87X 43X 23.5), with a stylish colorful two-tone finish. The phone includes 64 polyphonic ringtones and several user-friendly features like photo CLI (Call Line Identification) in phonebook.

Although very similar to the E800, the unique features of the E810 include a 180 degrees rotating lens in place of the E800's vanity mirror for a self-portrait picture. The E810 takes advantage of a motion-JPEG function, allowing users to capture up to 30 seconds of video, as well as a Multi-Shot feature that can produce 15 consecutive shots.

Both the E800 and E810 will be available in Q2 2004.

The SGH-i500 and the SGH-i700 handsets are designed to allow users to take their most important data with them on the road. These are capable of playing multimedia content such as digital music or video clips as well as emailing as document editing.

The i500 is the very first Palm OS smartphone using an ARM processor, and the first camera phone with Palm OS 5.2, enabling users to continuously connect to the Internet. What's new is that it's powered by an Intel PXA262 ARM-compatible processor running at 300 MHz, the fastest CPU of any Palm OS device yet announced. The Palm OS 5.2 includes Graffiti 2 handwriting system allowing users to draw characters directly onto the screen.

The i500 enables consumers to organize, connect, and view HTML Web sites. The device also includes an MMS client, WAP 2.0 capable browser, and J2ME support.

The handset, which is expected to be available in Q3 this year boasts also 180 degree swivel clamshell design, in-build 640 x 480 VGA camera and a 65,536 colour-capable TFT LCD screen.

The i700 is built around the Pocket PC Phone Edition operating system from Microsoft. It runs an Intel XScale PXA250 processor and has 64 MB of RAM and 64 MB of ROM. The mobile terminal includes Pocket Office for business needs, Windows Media Player for multimedia file playback and MSN Messenger for text messaging. With its advanced Wireless LAN supports (802.11b), users can easily access the Internet.

In addition, the device includes a built-in VGA camera with a rotating lens with no flash embedded. The 240 by 320 pixel touch-screen display supports 16-bit color.

The i700 is a GPRS world phone that supports 900/1800/1900. The device's speaker and microphone are on the back, so the screen isn't touching the user's face.

The standard 1100 mAh battery is replaceable and gives 200 minutes of talk time or 100 hours of standby time. A 2000 mAh battery is also available. Both i500 and i700 are expected in the first half of this year.
