Huawei's 3D Moderator app brings AR to the Mate 20 Pro and Porsche Design

Ivan, 19 November 2018

Huawei is launching its 3D Moderator app for the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20 RS Porsche Design which enables some pretty impressive AR tricks.

Using the advanced tech inside the Mate 20 Pro/RS Porsche Design notch and the Kirin 980 chipset, 3D Moderator can scan a real life object and let you play with it inside the camera viewfinder.

The app creates "AI Live Model" or "3D Live Object" by using the combination of the 24MP selfie camera, the dot projector, flood illuminator, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor and the IR camera, in conjunction with the Kirin 980 chipset's two Neural Processing Units. The object you want to bring into AR should be between 15cm and 25cm. The video below gives a demonstration of how the 3D Moderator app works.

The coolest thing about 3D Moderator is its ability to animate the object you've scanned. It can perform actions such as jumping, ballet, happy walking, cross stepping, easy running and even Kung fu.

The 3D Moderator app is exclusive to the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20 RS Porsche Design and will be available via the Huawei App store on those devices.

There is not such App named "3D Moderator" in Huawei App Marketplace. There is another app with the same functionality from Huawei named "3D Live Maker"

Crazy tech

I am quite sure it can be done with rear cameras as well and it does not need those advanced FaceID sensors cause Sony has this too and it lacks both
