MediaTek will unveil the Dimensity 9300+ on May 7 with a focus on AI

Peter, 29 April 2024

We heard rumors that a new vivo X100s will be unveiled in May and that it will arrive with a Dimensity 9300+ at the helm. No specific date was given, but we now have a good candidate – MediaTek officially announced that the 9300+ will be unveiled on May 7 (Tuesday next week).

There’s no mention of vivo, so the chipset may come ahead of the phone. What the company does mention is the AI functionality that will be a highlight of the new chipset – the theme of the conference is “AI for Everything”.

Earlier today there was a huge leak showing the changes from the original Dimensity 9300 to the plus model. It offers a higher CPU performance as the prime Cortex-X4 core runs at 3.4Ghz (up from 3.25GHz). The other three X4 cores remain at 2.85GHz and the four A720 cores at 2.0GHz.

As mentioned, AI will be a major part of the new chipset and the vivo X100s – vivo shared demo images that show how the phone can take a photo and change the season with generative AI.

The 9300 already has an “APU” – unlike the common use of the abbreviation, here it stands for “AI Processing Unit”. There are no details about it yet, but presumably that will get a boost too, not just the CPU.

The Dimensity 9200+ was unveiled at last year’s MediaTek Dimensity Developer Conference on May 10, the 9300+ will be the star of the 2024 conference. It included a GPU overclock, not just CPU and was used by vivo (for the X90 series), as well as Oppo and Xiaomi.

MediaTek is putting the finishing touches on the next-gen flagship chipset, the Dimensity 9400, and it is expected to be ready in the final quarter of this year. According to leaks, the chip will move over to a 3nm TSMC node (N3E) and will switch the prime core to a Cortex-X5 (with the other cores remaining the same, i.e. 3x X4 and 4x A720). Early benchmarks show it edging out the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 in multi-core (but not single-core) Geekbench and in AnTuTu. The 9400 will bring improved AI performance too, of course.

I sure hope so. I actively don't use current "AI" because it can't be trusted with anything. Between the false confidence & hallucinations, I can't believe anyone actually uses it. Assistants on phones already di...
