Motorola Moto G6 Play in for review

While the Moto G6 Play is the most member of the newly announced trio, spanning the Moto G6 and Moto G6 Plus, it still has a lot to offer, especially for a price tag of around €200. In fact, the whole feel of the device doesn't seem all that different compared to the other two versions - it feels just as sturdy and solid in the hand despite its downgraded housing.

While the Moto G6 and G6 Plus come with Gorilla Glass 3 on the back, the G6 Play features plastic on its rear panel. Thanks to its rounded back panel, the handset rests comfortably in the hand while the power button is slightly grooved, making it hard to miss. The same can be said about the fingerprint reader placed on the back just below the camera - the chamfered ring around it makes it easy to feel and reach for.

Spec-wise, the smartphone is hardly exciting as you would expect from an entry-level smartphone - Snapdragon 430 with 8x Cortex-A53 1.4 GHz cores paired with Adreno 505 GPU, 5.7-inch IPS display (just like the regular Moto G6) but the resolution has been reduced to 720x1440 pixels. There are also two memory configurations - 32GB ROM with 3GB RAM and 16GB ROM with 2GB RAM. The G6 Play comes with a microSD card slot too for expanding the storage.

The only thing to arguably frown given the price tag probably be CPU cores' efficiency. The 28nm manufacturing process still used on the Snapdragon 430 platform undermine the rather big 4,000 mAh unit. Still, we expect good battery life and good enough day-to-day performance as the stock Android 8.0 is pretty lightweight compared to some of the launchers on the market. After all, this is the key selling points of Motorola devices.

As far as cameras go, the main one is 13MP with f/2.0 aperture with PDAF while the front selfie shooter is 8MP. But you can expect camera samples and all of the usual tests regarding battery life, performance and display quality when the full review is published, so stay tuned.
