Samsung is expecting the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5 to outsell their predecessors by 50%

Peter, 28 July 2023

Recently, TM Roh, the head of Samsung’s mobile division, revealed that the company sold just under 10 million foldable phones last year (60% of which were Galaxy Z Flip4s, 40% Z Fold4s). For 2023 the company expects to sell 50% more than that.

This means that the target is around 15 million sales, which will keep Samsung the dominant player in the foldable market. Some analysts (Trendforce) are predicting that 18 million foldables will be shipped this year, others (IDC) are saying that the number will be above 20 million. That will mean that three quarters of all foldables sold in 2023 will be Galaxys.

While the 2022 models had a fairly even split, TM Roh expects that this year the Galaxy Z Flip5 will have a bigger lead over the Galaxy Z Fold5 and that this will be more pronounced in Korea.

In another interview, Roh said that the expectation is that 1 in 3 Galaxy flagships sold in South Korea will be a Z foldable. In the global market “foldable sales will exceed 20% of all Galaxy flagships”.

Last year the head of the mobile division claimed that Galaxy Z foldables will surpass the Galaxy S series by 2025. It’s doable if Samsung can maintain this pace of growth for the Z series, next year we will have a better idea whether the 2025 target is achievable.

In the mean time, check out our photo tour of Seoul with the Galaxy Z Flip5 and with the Galaxy Z Fold5. We also benchmarked both phones to see how the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy chip performs in a foldable form factor.

Flip 5 is just waterproof while Razr 40 Ultra is certified ip52 dustproof and water rappelling with a better and bigger screen which access any apps on the phone. And you want the Flip 5 to sell more?

If a phone looks the same as the last model, people may think they don't need to buy the new one since they wouldn't be able to show that they "got the new model"

I've had my Fold 3 for 2 years, I'm a mechanic, it gets dirt and grime on it and I don't treat it special in any way. No issues whatsoever. Just pre ordered the 5 and getting $800 of trade in for this one. Can't complain at all.
