Samsung in Barcelona: 5 megapixel and touch

10 Feb, 2008

It was Samsung's turn to get their share of the spotlight at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The audience was given a detailed presentation of the developments in the Samsung portfolio, focused on five key categories of handsets: Style, Multimedia, Business, Infotainment and Co-branding. Now, some of the gadgets have been around long enough for us to give them a go, but there was a bunch of fresh faces too. The new phones today: G810, P960, F480, F400, L770, J700, I200, J150 and E251.

Samsung G810

The Samsung G810 cameraphone is obviously the successor of the groundbreaking Samsung G800, but this time the imaging prowess comes in Symbian flavor.

Samsung G810 is a tri-band, 3G enabled handset with HSDPA 3.6Mbps support. G810 is running on Symbian v9.2 S60 3rd edition OS and has an ample 2.6" TFT QVGA display.

The 5 MP autofocus camera goes with 3x optical zoom and xenon flash. Thanks to the built-in GPS receiver, geotagging is available.

Images can be viewed on a TV screen thanks to the integrated TV-out, while listening to music on standard headphones is possible thanks to the 3.5 mm AV jack. Naturally, an audio and video player are available with multiple file format support.

Connectivity is ensured by Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 and USB 2.0. Samsung G810 offers integration of Youtube, Google search, Map and Gmail.

Samsung P960

Another announcement in the Infotainment category, Samsung P960 is a stylish multimedia phone in the slider form factor.

Samsung P960 is again a quad-band GSM /EDGE phone with HSDPA support. Another common feature is the 2.6" TFT QVGA display.

The major highlight of P960 is the DVB-H support with a TV-like pictogram on one of the shortcut keys next to the D-pad. The other multimedia goodies include audio and video player with multiple file format support, as well as FM Radio with RDS.

Other than that, Samsung P960 has a 3 megapixel camera, about which there is no other information at this stage.

In terms of connectivity, the P960 offers Bluetooth 2.0 and USB 2.0. Notable preinstalled features are the document viewer and internet browser.

Samsung F480

Samsung F480 is keen to impress with both design and features. A tri-band phone with HSDPA 7.2Mbps support, Samsung F480 has an ample 2.8" touchscreen QVGA display. The camera counts the impressive 5 megapixels and comes with autofocus, power LED flash, image and video stabilization. Slow motion and video editing are also on board. Of course, there is audio and video player with multiple file format support, as well as FM Radio with RDS. Other applications include video messaging, e-mail, mobile tracker and mobile blogging. At 11.5 mm thick, F480 ranks among the slimmest feature-packed gadgets. The impressive user interface and navigation are the final touch of style to this promissing performer.

Samsung F400

Samsung F400 is definitely a music-centered phone, which partially replicates the design of the music smartphone Samsung i450. It's a dual slider with an external speaker of very sleek exterior and ample D-pad. The sound quality is entrutsed to the Bang & Olufsen ICEamp technology.

Samsung F400 is another quad-band GSM/EDGE phone with HSDPA 3.6 Mbps support. A notable difference from the two devices above, F400 has a smaller 2.2" TFT QVGA display.

The music list continues with the Music Library, Music Recognition and Real Recognition features. Of course, there is audio and video player with multiple file formats support, as well as FM Radio with RDS.

It not all about the music, though. Samsung F400 is equipped with a 3 megapixel CMOS camera.

Bluetooth 2.0 and USB 2.0 complete the basic specs.

Samsung L770

Pigeonholed in the Style category, Samsung L770 is a sleek slider (what else, we're talking Samsung) featuring HSDPA and mobile blogging. The handset offers a 2.1" QVGA display, audio and video player, 2 megapixel camera and an FM radio.

Samsung J700

Similar in shape and design to L770 but obviously inferior in functions, Samsung J700 will cater to the style sensitive budget-minded users. The modest, yet attractive, slider offers a notably smaller display (2", 128 x 160 pixel) and 1.3 megapixel shooter. HSDPA support is missing in this tri-band handset with EDGE. FM radio is on board, though. Bluetooth and USB go without saying.

An interesting entry level smartphone, Samsung I200 candybar is the only business novelty. Running on Windows Mobile 6 Standard, this down-to-earth smarty sports a 2.3" QVGA display and a 2 megapixel CMOS shooter. The indisputable highlights of the business-minded device are HSDPA and the OS. The tri-band handset also offers EDGE, Bluetooth and USB support.
