OmniVision outs two sensors with phase-detection autofocus

17 November, 2014
The two stacked sensors can shoot QHD video and 1080p@90fps, but not 2160p footage.

Try READING before attempting to be clever:

"The modules measure 10.5x10.5mm and are about 6mm tall, the higher res module is slightly taller at 6.3mm."

...Or do you live in some a 4D+Time world?

    Apple fanboys be like:
Samsung Galaxy S5 touts its first phone with phase detection - "meh. didn't hear anything."

    after a year..
Apple touts its first phone with phase detection - "wow!! we are the first to use phase detection!!!"

When the day finally comes that most flagship phones have 1/2.3 sensors, we will finally have caught up to the five year old N86.

Wow, it will be quite an advance.

Of course we'll still be far behind the already two year old Nokia 808, with its 1/1.2 sensor, and the year old Nokia 1020 with its 1/1.5 sensors.

It's amazing how cell phones have totally stagnated with camera technology, purusing gimmicks, rather than basic improvements to photography.

In the world of real cameras things have moved steadily forward, but cell phone companies have really tricked consumers into thinking totally outdated sensor technology is something new an improved.

If you read my post I mentioned that Samsung was first with Phase-Detection. What I'm saying is that once Apple does something it becomes very public, whether you admit that or not. The moment they announced the stabilization and phase-detection, everyone took notice.

This is why I like Apple. The moment they bring out an interesting technology, such as phase detection, everybody takes note. I know Samsung was first with phase detection, but still, after Apple did all these companies came out with their versions of phase detection modules.

Marketing wise, they have the lack of 4K video working against them, quite heavily.

Whether we agree or not (that it's useful or not for our purposes), it's going to be one of the main differentiating factors the coming year.

6.3mm sounds thick if it should be fitted inside a phone/phablet. Unless it includes the lens of course.
