Making the phone with saphire glass only increases the cost of the phone with a few dollars and its durability sky high as only diamonds and few other durable stones can scratch it.This being said, i have no f...... clue why are they using this shit gorilla glass and not saphire, offering us scratch proof glass.

Or maybe they do, they dont wanna burry the protector film business.

Lucky me i have never needed the toughness but it feels comforting knowing how strong it is.

I don't know about the LCD, but I have seen a number of SAMOLEDs working while the glass on top is crumbling away. My colleague for example shattered his GS3 screen soon after the phone came out and has recently replaced that phone about two weeks ago and it was still working but looking scary.

Gorilla Glass flexes. As a result it mostly doesn't crack when it takes an impact. But the AMOLED/LCD which is attached to Gorilla Glass cracks and gets unusable.
So the matter is not to protect the outside glass but protect the LED/LCD screen.
