Jolla celebrates tablet's success with price cut for its phone

21 November, 2014
The company is clearly very happy having raised more than $1 million for its upcoming tablet.

Sort by:

€349 for the OS only.. the hardware is of €100 maximum.. why everybody wants to recover the cost of a single line they have written.. you can make a cheap product and use revenue maximization model.

Seems they dont wanna put all their eggs in the same basket even when all the eggs are already broken.

Still high for a phone in the lower part of midrange, its only the 16GB storage that separates it from entry level phones. If only it had 720p display it would sell well even at 349 Euro but qHD is such a good reason to not pay even 249. Epic fail by Jolla, and tats why their tablet will not get a cent from me, these guys has proven their ability to fail and has shown no signs of improvement, they didnt even admit what a astronomic blunder they made with the Jolla phone. And by the way, i knew MeeGo was a failure already a few days after i started using my Nokia N9, an immense downgrade from Maemo5.

I'm still a bit divided about Jolla gunning for a tablet right now as I'm of the opinion that they should focus on tightening up the smaller screen (smartphone) space 1st before scaling it up. To put it in perspective, Apple got their 1st iPad out after 3GS that's like what 3 iPhones. Though I'm an Apple critic there's lots of things that I don't deny at what/how Apple approaches their product decision making. Plus it's hard for me to use an Android OEM as an example when I fully support how Jolla seems to be taking the lesser devices' path.

The problem right now is Jolla phone still is arguably the world's priciest Snapdragon 400 + 4.5" qHD 540 x 960 phone and 2014 are closing its curtain. What then? I use Android but to me tablets be it iPad, Android or Win are still at WIP levels not really the complete laptop replacement. In Android it's precisely the reason why phablets are so successful, a lot of people would rather not add a 7" tablet just to run the same apps on a bigger screen.

So it falls down fully to the OS then not a device per se this is where Jolla need to decide definitively. Since Ubuntu Edge's convergence ambition has failed to start I've been wondering when/who will have the balls to pick that up and now I think that Jolla is the one rightly positioned to execute. But TIME is everyone's enemy and might be that MS plans to do just that with their Windows 10. And if they do, they got the sheer muscle to pull that off but no shame if Jolla can be the counter 2nd as an alternative.

Samsung and Apple had the most powerful marketing, hence the reason why theyre the top 2. Samsung is different, they had lots of money compared to apple. So in half of the time that took apple to be recognised as high class brand, samsung became another high class brand. Samsung has done the correct thing. These days its all about marketing. If apple or Jolla had samsung's marketing it would of been successful.

Jolla is not a known brand, outside the tech community these devices don't have potential to do well in the market.

Biggest reason was noncompetitive price. Its now time to cut the losses, gain more exposure and hope for the tablet to do well.

As a matter of fact the discounted rate is going to recover some of the money that was put into the manufacturing of the phone.
