The Lumia 535 will get software updates, where as the Nokia XL won't.
I'd see if you could try out the Windows Phone interface. If you like it, then I think the Lumia 535 will be the way to go.
If you're into more customisations, then the Nokia XL might be the way to go - however, do remember there's no software support.

Buy 535 because you won't get 5mp front camera with such a low price. Even Android doesn't have this. (branded company). Then download gesture beta app and experience the difference between WP and Android or ios.
If you like YouTube then download YT downloader and enjoy YouTube videos and songs in offline.( I downloaded 2:57 minutes movie in just below 30 minutes 2 weeks back). All the best my friend.

I wish this phone got LTE at the first place, it is such a great budget phone. Since I don't know how good the 3G is in the U.S while the 4G data is still available. 3G is just not enough!
