I believe this will sell like hot cakes.
For Google they can put everything basic and competitive price for the majority of the people. And people who wants good specifications can upgrade the modules which are necessary for them (e.g. Camera, Latest Processor, Ram, etc).
However, they should not limit the CPU only to Tegra or Snapdragon or Mediatek or any other. It should be open for all.
Very soon we will see other Phone manufacturers will start selling modules rather than Phone. ha ha ha ......

oooh... i will finally will be able to assemble a costum phone .. NICE!
- Ditch the screens with retarded resolutions (4k)
- above average camera but not to much.
- LOTS of memory (RAM/ROM)
- LOTS of battery
- maybe dualsim, i kinda need it
- fun extras
I hope it wont be too bulky on launch, doesnt need to be too thin tough.

Another website reports the following after a hands-on and interview with Ara Project Leader Paul Eremenko:
"Perhaps more worrying is that apparently maintaining the connectivity between modules alone takes up 20 percent of the phone's battery."
So, yeah it still looks cool and it's an interesting concept and all (already established) -- but now really who still wants one? nuff' said.

Today's phones are conservative blocks of technology which offer nil customization tn the hardware perspective.This surely needs to be changed.People are just fine to upgrade individual pieces because if an person just wants to upgrade his camera to say a cannon one he can do so without changing the rest of the phone .Which means this will make a smaller hole on his wallet. And if you could upgrade the components needed for like 40$ to 50$ instead of spending like 300$ on a new phone why would you spend that extra amount

I'm predicting this will be niche product that will lose developer support fast when they see it not selling. It won't be nearly as successful as Google's Nexus line. Only a company like Google has enough disposable money to throw away into a kooky project like this, otherwise no real investors would back this.
There's still a lot of unanswered questions and Google's actually counting on naive people like YOU to run out and buy this in an impulsive moment. I actually enjoy the phone shopping experience and forward to the time when I decide it's time to go out and buy a new phone.
The key question to ask people is, if you could magically upgrade (for a price) the components in your existing phone, would you? Or would you just prefer to buy a whole new phone? I would prefer the latter. Project Ara is almost the equivalent of getting your shoes resoled so you can wear them for another year. Reality is most people just want to buy new shoes and actually enjoy the experience of having brand new shoes VS the boring compromise of getting your old shoes resoled.

manufacturers wont develop module until consumer embrace it
consumer won't buy it until manufacturers shows up with upgrade that proves its limitless expandability.

todays phone are perfectly fine.
upgrade just one part will never be sufficient if you care about having worthwhile improvement.
people jump to upgrade bc with a new phone every part gets redesign and test to make sure its efficient and stable much more improved.
wait until you find out maintaining modules upgrade are not so cheap and only create more waste.

Once it gets delayed to be delivered in Europe/US, interest will drop.
Consider DSLR systems. Once manufacturer is ready to release it with a couple of lenses, they do it. Because lens development/production takes a lot of time. If the main module is ready and some alternative modules are already developed, it is time to release that phone. I wait for that phone as well. What I expect is;
-5.5" Full HD screen
-64 bit, 4GB RAM based unit
-SD card slot
-3 optical zoom camera module
-High quality audio module (allows at least 1V DC - preferably 2V - output for feeding music to amplifier)
Such a phone would kill everybody else in the market. Am I wrong?

Sounds good, but when u say 11 or 30 modules, it quickly becomes a niche product, not everyone has time or knowledge to deal and it could all end up costing more.

"Who will ever use impractical, large, easily brakable phone, that needs constant view, to hit right buttons!".
Well guess what, they were all wrong as hell - its allready hard to find "practical dumb-phone" allready.
To say, it wont take off, cause you are too short sighted - is more than stupid! Sorry.

I would totally get one of these but, at the same time, I don't think sales would really take off.
There are too many people in the world who want stuff that works right out of the box. Look at all the people who buy Macs. Look at all the people who buy OEM PCs and never really ever upgrade parts unless they break down. They just want something that works without any additional effort on their part. And we can't fault them for that.

I wish it succeeds but it must see the production far too quickly for it to sustain the interest and compete against normal phones. For this to succeed mass adoption is important because Mobile Technology undergoing far more quick transformation and any delay may make this solution pointless if the transformation becomes too fast to make this Ara obsolete. Google Glass is classic example and I feel they failed to see the usefulness but this one has excellent potential to succeed. Size must be lot more compact (width)
