Even microsoft them selves are thankful for those cooked roms, Windows are for cooking, companies buy windows for the phones then cook it for the company's preferences.. We then cook the Roms for our preferences.. Windows 6.5 is amazing in X1..

Can you really fault people when they're worried about the phone's main feature being limited by WinMo?
And even if you say 90% (which I assume is based on your personal subjective POV and not on a scientific study) what about the other 10%?
People that pay for a great screen are expecting it to perform well 100% of the time.
You say not to focus so much on a single thing, but really, it does make part of the "package", and it's a huge part of it.
What use is a big screen with AMOLED if it might suffer in display quality?

So I believe the so called experts also happen to be Iphone fanboys. And no one in the Windows Mobile community that is, users, developers, phone manufacturers, etc were under any illusion that 6.5 was supposed to make a huge difference. Its SIX POINT FIVE for a reason. Its based on version 6 update .5 and not version 7. So the only people expecting a full change from 6.1 are those that haven't used WM or rather, those that don't understand or rather did not take the time to understand, Microsoft's naming convention.

Yes you can see the difference between 65k and 16 million. No its not so much in the quality but in the intensity of the image. In other words, a 16 million screen's colour come off more intense and bright than a 65k screen but does not really affect the quality of the image. As in details are still there, colour reproduction, check, clarity, sharpness, check. But if that's not enough to convince people that in 90% of phone usage you will not feel the difference, let me ask a simple question. Do you buy a phone based on the number of colours the screen shows? Or the entire package. Because if 16 million is so important, go get a low end Nokia phone released in the past 2 years then load up all the pictures and movies and admire the 16 million difference all day long. Grow up. Samsung Omnia II is not just the 65k limit of WM6.1 Its the 3.7" AMOLED WVGA 8GB 667/800MHz, 256MB RAM/512 MB ROM package. Stop always finding fault with phones or OS you don't like. If you don't fancy WM then look elsewhere.

WM GUI still will be limited to 16 bit though.
As far as players concerned, CorePlayer and even TCPMP both have DirectDraw Overlay support for video output."
And:
"Wow. There is a big difference in the colour between movies played in TCPMP and TouchPlayer. Touch Player gives distinct banding where there are subtle differences in the colours (eg on walls or a clear blue sky or dark grey space). TCPMP gives a much better transition."
I don't know about pictures though.

Anonymous, 02 Sep 2009what's all the discussion about 65k?? nobody is able to see... moreAlso, I belive the reason Omnia II is stated as having great picture quality, even with possible banding, would be because it excels in other things such as what you mentioned (luminosity, contrast, etc.) in no small part due to it's AMOLED screen I believe.

Anonymous, 02 Sep 2009what's all the discussion about 65k?? nobody is able to see... moreI'm hardly an expert regarding image quality and stuff, but I thought that the difference deppends on the screen's resolution, which, the bigger they are, the more you notice a difference.
For instance, the Omnia II being 480x800 pixels, that amounts to 384000, more than 65k, and therefore causing color banding.
Whether you can see it or not, I guess it depends on the screen's physical size, being large enough or not.
From what I've researched, it can be seen quite easily on the Omnia II.
However, I think using a different player (CorePlayer I believe) will bypass WinMo's 65k limit, regarding multimedia. The GUI will remain the same.

what's all the discussion about 65k?? nobody is able to see any difference between 65k and 16M. The omnia II, despite it's restriction of 65k because of wm OS, is said to produce even better results than most of the 16M devices. And even if there were a (for sure only slight) difference, for "normal" people this hardly can be a match winning point. From all the different and more important specs, the 65k issue is the most discussed here.(?!) By the way, for a nice picture not only colors count, but also luminosity, contrast, resolution etc. After the really nice review of the Omnia II here (thanks), i'm really looking forward to test the device myself.

Hi, this new OS by windows mobile cannot be installed on the xperia x1 unfortunately. Due to its processor and some other functionalities it cannot be installed. Email the SE team who will assist you further.

Microsoft has forgotton one thing, why most of us started using WinMo. It was for teh PDA functionality...not the "chase iphone os" process thats going on. Keep the optionality of the old start menue and the old program tabs and you create your own identity.

People who haven't used a phone with WVGA resolution to a WinMo device, can NOT imagine how good thiings look with just 65k colours.
I don't want to defend it because I want 16 millions of colours too but you have to see for yourself.

he he he joke..its boring os..i had windows cell rt now i have samsung omnia hd wow its super fast gr888 win 6.5 cant compare and beat symbian os nd iphone mac os gr888 phone dude so u must go with dis phone dont preferred windows..!!!!!

this version of winmo has already been criticize by mobile phone experts even before it came out and instead wait for version 7, sad but i think winmo created a coffin for itself by releasing long due upgrades
