It doesn't matter what people buy. If you flood the market with 5+ phone that is what they're going to buy. It's the industry not the people that sets trend, people merely follow...
"Phones" got far less usable in the last few years but as long as people are buying nobody complains. About a year or so ago Ars Technica released a research showing how significantly slower are people at doing things in 5+ screen and that's no wonder ~4.5 inches is what is closer to the human palm. Any more than that and usability suffers, for example the 6 incher nexus 6 is close to impossible to use in a hurry, but whatever as long as people (sheeple) are buying who cares if they truly get a worse product...
