Very thin is the only plus point which, unfortunately, means almost everything else is compromised (battery, bezels, power, storage, massively protruding camera, audio via USB, etc, etc...).

        It's a showpiece that is two years too early. If the battery is giving only a few hours usage then something has gone too far. The bizarre thing is Oppo must know from their past devices that ColorOS is a thirsty ROM with over-zealous background app killing. And that doesn't bode well for such as skinny battery and big screen/res combination.

        Maybe pure Android, CM or Sense could get 4 hours SOT. I'd take that as a minimum.

                Finally handled one of these today for an hour (in China). I took cash from the back ready to buy if suitably impressed.

                Observations:

                1. Slightly cumbersome and uncomfortable due to bezels and chin, and slab-squarish design. I could just about one-hand it akin to my Note 4. Most people will two-hand it, though.

                2. It's thin but it doesn't feel that much different to handling phones that taper or curve to similarly thin edges (OnePlus, Find7, M8, Note 4). Very similar in size to Find 7 and Note 4 but with a smaller screen.

                3. Battery drained 12% in 30 minutes of light use on WiFi in the store. This was at 50% brightness doing browsing, taking pics, in the settings, just general playing around. I'd be worried about 4G and don't bother with games. Keep the VOOC close by.

                4. AnTuTu gave 31,500~ and Geekbench around 2,750. Decent overall but it really stuttered in the 3D games part.

                5. Camera seemed good. Quick to focus and snap in average lighting indoors. Hard to really quality check on screen.

                6. ColorOS was OK but felt sluggish in parts (slow app opening times and scroll lag). Having owned previous Oppos, I know all too well about OS updates - they tend to be weekly but have minor improvements and can sometimes make things worse. Getting underlying Android point updates is a long wait. This was on 4.4.4 so I don't see Lollipop for a long time which is a pity as the 64-bit 615 might get a free boost.

                7. 'Gold' version looks terrible! The band is gold but the back is almost all white side from a gold Oppo logo. Looks much cheaper than the silver which has 90% silver on the rear. No idea what the designers were thinking with the 5% gold (read white) version.

                Overall: It's a fashion statement for size zero fans who might use their phone for an hour or two each day. The
                thin design is negated by the almost certain need to carry the charger and stay close to a power socket, or take a portable charger with you.

                I know there's some tech in the materials and thin means tradeoffs, but for the price there are much better options for most people (battery / onboard storage / SD card to name a few). Even Oppo just dropped the QHD 3GB/32GB Find 7 to the same price here 2,999 RMB and the younger sibling Find 7a to 2,499 RMB.

                I'd like to see Oppo try a metal curved device like the M8. They tend to design well but have gone a bit too far on the R5. Visually it's thinner but ergonomically it's a step sideways due to size and feel.

                TL;DR: Looks nice, feels OK, performs OK, won't last too long.
