AnonD-360804, 06 Feb 2015Android was a late bloomer in done sense it took sooo many ... moreWell thats what thousands of people said about android in it's infancy, that it was "low powered" and not optimal for smartphone users. Now it has the lions share of the market for smartphones.

For all we know, this could really kick off and eventually overtake Android if open source diehards are more bite than bark.

AnonD-360821, 06 Feb 2015Android is actually Linux too :)Actually no it isn't linux, it uses a heavily modified older version of the kernel and is mostly comprised of Java and Google's APIs.

Mediatek with 4.5-inch 540x960 and 1 GB RAM in 2015, yeah right, don't think so. Make a tablet instead with 1920x1080 or 1200, with Nvidia Tegra X1 or something. ;P

This is an entry product for a market that has s lot of low end phones

Any phone that is repurposed for ubuntu will look odd and have useles artifacts from the android edition. Meizu's will likely still have that home button

churman, 06 Feb 2015I dont get....why dont they just create a android rom..with... moreThat has been discussed so many times too many to talk about ubuntu and android are al Ist around the same age
If Canonical (a software company ) used another conpanies entire os it wouldn't be good business practice

For one it would be hell for the developers becuase they don't maintain the os they maintain shat they can change

They would end up like cyanogen and Amazon at the mercy of upstream changes to android os by google
And finnaly they want to bring platform specific features back to desktop

"...the first Ubuntu smartphone will be anything but a flagship...."

Oh Dear... then who will buy this? COmputer geeks are the only ones who even know what Linux is and who actually can appreciate a Linux phone. I don't see Joe Average wanting this phone.

"...The phone has a 4.5-inch 540x960 touchscreen, an 8 MP rear camera with dual-LED flash...."

Basically a Jolla phone running ubuntu :-/

Don't know what to think of it except maybe: "Too Little, too late".

catalin, 06 Feb 2015Being ugly sure doesn't help. Because it's any uglier than the Fire Phone or special edition iPhone models?

It looks fine. Don't be so superficial.
