i know its a phone but looks more like a camera think it's just lost the plot hear must try harder to make it more a phone than a camera

AGAIN:
Despite its deceving photo camera design,
( Ehhh, SAMSUNG!!!! GROW UP!!!)
this is not a replacement for digital camera.
HERE IS WHY:
1) -Small optics
2) -Small sensor
(other user mentioned here the truth: with this optics and sensor low light shooting is useless).
ABOUT OPTICAL ZOOM:
3x Optical zoom is nothing even in digital camera world anymore.
Panasonic has simply turned the digital camera world upside down with the introduction of TZ-Series compact super zoom cameras (ZS3 model has 12x zoom already).
CONCLUSION:
Cellular phones only have achied perfect Music and Video players.
Want a real compact and perfect Pro Photo camera?
Then check OLYMPUS E-P1 and PANASONIC GF1 (Two Superb New Digital Cameras) and you will forget about playing with a camera phone junk for ones and for good!

12mp? IMHO i don't think all the phone manufacturer has perfectly deal with the 8mp and yet they are making 12mp now? Viewty2,Omnia HD, pixon, innov8 and other 8mp cameraphone by lg and samsung has no xenon, c905 had one-but then video quality really disappointing; n86 come up with variable aperture (good start for a cameraphone) but no xenon and buggy software; and none of this 8mp had an optical zoom.
i wonder is there's a manufacturer that will actually come out with a phone that has all the basic essential specs for a digicam in a cameraphone (and will work well too..) ;)

hello people, whats the point of complaining so much. Its meant for korea market not for you people. Korea is a technology power house, their people demand for phone specs are thus different from you people. Camera with optical zoom is not new to koreans and samsung had released similar phone years ago.
After reading so many complain, i do understand why samsung choose to release this phone in korea and not the whole world because not all market is suitable for this product yet, as seem from the number of raging replies.
Someone said samsung had put their R&D team with the sales team as samsung is obsess with many "first to introduce blah blah etc". But if they arent the first to introduce some1 bound to introduce it someday. And if they are the first but the second, im sure there will be people complaining samsung is copying XXX..
Camera phone at this size is seriously not what normal people around the world seek, but you people arent koreans, you do not know what they want, what if this is what they are pursuing, there is nothing wrong for samsung to release to meet their consumer demand.
But i kudos to samsung, its really a long way to match up to no1 nokia but they are really keeping up and doing really well, im not surprise they could threaten nokia position, afterall they are a solid no 2 phone vendors in the world. in years to come, i could foresee a strong head to head fight for world no 1 phone vendor.

Regarding MP, Satio also has 12MP, and from the gsmarena's preview http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_satio_idou-review-358p5.php, it's even better than i8510 which is the best of 8MP phones.
I don't know much about camera, I don't know what is the relation of MP and sensor size, but the facts is 12MP is better than 8MP at least for camera phones.
And we don't want big file size, just reduce the resolution, if we want maximum quality use 12MP, it's simple.

you know what? in commercial world only these numbers rule!!! 12 is a fantastic number for now. Nikon E3 with 5k$ price is the same res!!!!!!
In camera world, canon has reduced it's 15MP G10 enthusiasts compact camera to 10 for G11 with the same sensor size (1/1.7") because of the same reason you mentioned. Better performance of a camera with larger pitch in low light. The result is a fantastic camera, compared to highly criticized G10.
This is what canon (one of the best names in both compact and SLR cameras) does. But Samsung!!! I believe the products are designed by the sales department in this company instead of R&D!!!!! All the added features are Advertisement oriented. "1st 8MP touch phone" for instance!!! Regardless if it makes anything better or easier or not!!!
But according to my experience:
In handsets, more than cameras, file size does matter, why? because I mostly want to share my photos with the others, this is why I'm using a phone to take pictures.
With the same sensor size: Higher resolution = higher noise = more noise reduction = losing bigger ratio of details compared to the size ----> the same details as result with a bigger file!!! At last for sharing such a large file you have to resize it (i.e in facebook) so some one tell me what the advantage of such a stuff is for my mobile???

What I said about N98 is true, that phone will have 12MP camera, 1GHZ CPU(Snapdragon), Linux OS, 3.5 inch WVGA screen, and 64GB internal memory. That phone will be announced on MWC 2010.

Now thats what we call Samsung Factor !! 12 MP camera .. I just wish they comnbine it with Omnia Series !! But I dont believe dat it would b a replacement of a Full Digital Camera , But still a Good Start !! Keep it Up Samsung !! AM UR BIg Fan !!

Optical zoom is useful, but it makes the whole package very fragile. One drop and that's it.

Can't believe how many haters there are in here. Look we want devices that take over other devices so we won't have to fit so many in one pocket. Over the years they added calculator, camera, PDA, mp3, compass, and internet browsing features on cell phones. There's nothing wrong with putting more features on one item, it makes life more convenient and it's the reason we have what we have today. Maybe those nokia fans will stop complaining when they see that Nokia have finally opened their eye's to see what their competition are doing and bring out something breath taking and will thank Samsung for building up their camera.
