Customizing includes custom roms which require rooting or can be done by launchers without root. Root privileges encompass much more functionality than simply cosmetic changes.

Win10 on my Note4..a 19" monitor with a docking port to put my phone, a keyboard and a mouse - i no longer need to carry a laptop bag to go to work!

Still you cannot root it.
With Xiaomi price will go down significantly but without ability to fully customize your phone, it will be a huge barrier.
