Anonymous, 24 Mar 2015First a 5 inch screen (16:9) is 62.2×111 cm. So yeah ... moreYeah, I agree it's coming, but I still don't like it... My practical limit for a phone's screen is 5", and I am not going over that, regardless of the bezel size. And yes, it's my personal opinion, of course. Maybe, it'll grow on me (pun intended), I dunno. :)

BTW, I realized you meant a different iPhone, right after I responded... But anyway, the *original* iPhone is 115x61 mm, and that's keeping in mind that it is thick, and has VERY rounded sides (not just corners, but sides). Meaning, there is NO WAY of fitting a 5" screen of the size you mentioned into that casing without heavily changing an entire design (making it 1+ mm wider, making flat sides like iPhone 4/5, and almost square corners)... So, yes, the 5" screen could technically be squeezed in about the same *footprint* as an original iPhone (just a tad larger), but I wouldn't call it practical. But again, it's my opinion. I think that large TVs with bezels so thin that you pretty much don't see them are plain ugly, and yet so many people are drooling over them. To everyone their own... :)

Anonymous, 23 Mar 2015What you are saying about ergonomics is questionable at bes... moreFirst a 5 inch screen (16:9) is 62.2×111 cm. So yeah it fits the case of the original iphone (NOT iphone 4 , reread my post), w/t any other modification.

Secondly the aspect ratio is great (16:9), the best in business IMO.

There is a tech developed lately which rejects any touch not bearing a fingertip (I. E. One that doesn't come from the tip of one's finger). If you the think about it only the tip of your finger is the one doing any work at all, the rest of your hand merely produces accidental touches. So-yeah- accidental touches are out too.

Lastly Huawei (I think it was) is developing a screen fully made from sapphire glass which is supposed to be shatter proof.

My point is that we are clearly not there but it's also clearly the future. Imagine a device as small as the original iphone yet being a full smartphone (5 incher), or alternatively as big as S6 yet being a phablet (6 inches).

Yes it is ugly, but it can be the only future, devices are getting bigger and bigger, and more useless by the minute. I already have a tablet thank you very much.

Anonym, 24 Mar 2015No it doesn't make ergonomics better, quite the opposite, i... moreBezels are already so slim on many phones that this is an issue and there is already a solution for it (phones can detect intentional and accidental touche events, based on how they're touched). If this were a real issue, most people, with most modern phones, would constantly be causing accidental events every time they pick up and hold their phone.

The myth that this is an issue came mainly out of the iPhone camp, because some explanation needed to be made for its huge behind the time bezels on its phones with behind the times screen sizes. With the iPhone 6 catching up to the Jones, no one hardly talks about this anymore, because it's not an issue and was never true.

Anonymous, 23 Mar 2015Eliminating bezels makes ergonomics of the phone better), i... moreNo it doesn't make ergonomics better, quite the opposite, it makes it a pain to quickly maneuver the device without registering unwanted/accidental touches at the edges of the screen.

(In generic terms) What it does give is a better utilization of the device surface so that bigger screens can be accommodated without actually increasing the device footprint (hence why slimmer bezels became so attractive in current days).

However this trick misses that point. It's an optical illusion, not actually a bigger screen. It means you get all the disadvantages of slimmer bezels and very little benefits from it (only a subjective advantage in aesthetics for those who do like this look -- something which I haven't decided yet where I stand).

While I do understand its questionable nature, I also have no doubt that is a genuine innovation (for better or worst).

Personally I find it an oxymoron that the same guys who bother so much with bezels and are going to such lengths to remove them (Oppo) are the same ones that are still keeping the capacitative buttons underneath the screen (which is actually a form of bezel by itself).

Don't get me wrong, I do dislike on-screen buttons and actually prefer those capacitative buttons, but I think you can start to get the double standards in their reasoning and how less bezel doesn't always equate to better.

I personally DO like bezels, as long as they are reasonably sized. And I would definitely refrain from making statements about "everybody" or "nobody", because such generalization doesn't work in 99.99% of all cases. Besides, judging from comments, I can see that many people share the same point of view... I will repeat what I already said: bezelless screens are 1) not functional, and ) aesthetically ugly. I gave you a couple of examples of good designs (in my opinion). One thing: I would gladly see the top bezel to be minimized to the same (reasonably minimal) size as the side ones, but not the bottom one.

The thinner the bezel the better as long as it doesn't impact on strength or become an issue with accidental touches.

I don't see screen without bezels as an improvement to ergonomics. At all. To me, it's awful ergonomically, and fugly aesthetically, so it's a losing proposition no matter how I look at it. But that's just me... Speaking of iPhone 4, you can only squeeze 5' screen into its size if you completely square off the corners, so your statement is not entirely true. Besides, I don't like the resulting aspect ratio (remember all the jokes about the iP5 tall and narrow screen?). There are examples of phones with a very good screen-to-body size ratios. LG G2 is one (it's still too big for my liking, and I don't really need a 5.2" screen), and Sony Xperia ZL is another (my current phone). Both are just under 76% ratio. To my knowledge, XZL is the most compact 5-incher you can find, and I am very happy with its bezel size...

This looks quite nice, I am not a fan of glass actually on the edges as I often drop my mobile so I avoid the more fragile devices like the iPhones.

This technology could be a neat way though to strengthen all brands once others make their own versions. This technique appears to be less fragile than devices with glass right to the edges / on the bezels.

Not sure how it will work long term but it could be good if it is implemented well.

A concern would be screen distortion, but again we will need to check it out in person to see how well it works in real use.

We swipe from the top & bottom of screens but hold a device on it's sides. Maybe that's next.
                                    Maybe 4 sided bezel-less phones!!
You'd need extensive damage insurance for something like that!! Drops would be horrific!

Apple and Samsung will apply that technology in around 2018-2020 as a "newest innovation" :D
