Sony Ericsson cut down some loss in Q3, but are still way behind

16 October, 2009
Just as promised, Sony Ericsson revealed their financial report for Q3 2009 today. Things are still looking pretty gloomy for the company, continuing to lose money, but at least the numbers are better...

      i hope SE survive .
when one company dominate it is not cool as diversity and creativity will disappear.
having lots of operating companies fuels creativity and competition

Here is how I view SE....a company which I would take over the almighty brand's products anytime....but probably 2nd from the bottom of my shopping list.

From the high level view, SE seems to lose its track in terms of offering mid-low end phones.

Not too long ago, SE relased a bunch of so called C5xx / W5xx series, can any SE experts here really recall the (minor) differences among them? Oh yeah, maybe the cam improved or whatever, but then why not simply get an old C8xx for better cam then?

Then suddenly its so called "Walkman" series started to improve on the cam quality "near" to "Cybershot" series, so what's there for C series then?

For non-experts like me, phones like W595/W995/W705 they all look similar, so are others like S302/K630/K530/W660/W610/K550/K618/W810...

And how many qwerty keypad phone has SE offered? After P9xx series, only X1, but somehow never heard they gain much "business" users like its competitors.

The proprietary design may also contribute to the company's failure. Recently I sold one of my phones, which had a 8GB micro SD card in it. I took out the card, put in an adapter, and there it goes right into my Canon G9 for thousands of photos. The other day my friend wanted to transfer me some pics, so I took out the 8GB micro-SD card from my phone with the adapter and it goes neaty into the laptop SD card slot.

Unless I'm a Sony fan (which I "used" to in the Walkman/Discman/MD days, but lost it since it started to use the back then not exactly reliable but yet expensive memory stick), which means I've walkmans, cams, and everything else being Sony, so they can read the memory sticks. Otherwise, for most consumers that means they need to spend more $ for the memory cards to begin with, not to mention accessories like fast port, and I'm not sure if SE is even going with the gang regarding the micro-USB charger / data transfer port at all.

Last but not least, most phone users of mid-low end phones use their phones to "talk", and if know anyone who owns any SE bar phones, chances are you have enjoyed the "background noise" instead of the person's own voice.

they must have learned from mistakes by now and certainly know what to do. new phones are the step in the right direction and i believe that if they manage to reliese all products planned for the future, and without too much delay, SE will be back on track. and on top with samsung where they belong

I believe that unlike other companies, SE are way behind in terms of OS (having only few hi-end expensive phones with WinMo and older Symbian UIQ ones) and in terms of technology (like the proprietary all-in-one jack relic that is the worst ever, and they are still using it on satio instead of the 3,5mm and a micro USB, or the micro M2 memory card). I think SE tried to do thinks by it's self, trying to do unique phones with no outside influences but instead they went on a long path to isolation in the phone business. I belive that if SE would make some all in one accessible phones (a mix betwin Walkman, Cyber Shot and PSP capabilities - at least in terms of software, the 3,5mm jack and micro USB) with some OS like the young catchy overrated Android, they would make a great phone. I hope that might be the X3. But who knows?

I used to be a Sony Fan, but I realized that for the past year, all the phone they make sucks! Once you bought their phone, 3 months later, definately there'll be some problem and you'll need to sent it back to service center. Any they actually make 'toy phones', their material makes you feel like you're holding a toy in your hand. And the best part is, service center here in our country employ all foreign staff which I believe they're not doing a good job, especially their english, really makes you sick!

I really love Sony Ericsson for their funky designs on their phones and how they focus on multimedia rather than very serious business phones but sometimes they have quite high prices for their phones which they should really change.. I hope the Satio, Aino, Yari, X2, and the upcoming X3 can help them a lot cause those phones are definitley good phones..

It is pretty obvious why the top phone makers for this year are doing well and Moto and SE are not.

Nokia - 5800 came out as Nokia's "first" fancy new touchscreen. Aggressively priced and sold millions of units.

LG - Cookie is a hit midrange touchscreen phone. LG KS360 was a hit among "tweens". GW520 was a spin off of the successful Cookie + KS360.

Samsung - 5230 Star is a touchscreen midrange phone to take on the LG Cookie. Did so well they came out with a wifi version to increase appeal.

Samsung Corby will be another smash hit for Christmas. Nokia has their 5800 spinoffs in the more affordable 5530 and the poor man's 5230 (copied samsung's model no?). The Nokia 6760 could have been a hit but the price is a little hot on the unlocked market. Now look at where SE & Motorola are at. No phone similar to the Cookie, Star, or 5530. Did you all not get the memo? iPhones and phones that resemble them are hot. Texting phones for teens are hot. High end phone with crazy specs are nice things to round out your offering but if you concentrate on low to mid end, nicely designed phones with average features you will have a successful phone.
