Announcing it prematurely will cause massive drop in Windows Phone sales, which hurts Microsoft so much, considering Windows 10 for phone is just few months away.
So Nokia have to take back what they announce earlier.
Don't worry, previous announcement still holds true. Nokia will make Android phones in 2016. They just don't want to cause confusion and uncertainty among Windows Phone user and developer.

only now have they gone 64bit.
Symbian was ahead of it's time, it was Nokia's own mismanagement that couldn't give it more support and keep it upto date with Android, iOS is out of question as iOS was nothing then and iPhone only sold because there was no alternative decent Android phones either.

AnonD-4340, 26 Apr 2015Why would you want an N8 if you dont like Symbian?? Weird! ... moreWhy would you indeed want an N8? A 808Pureview is soo much better AND faster. And if photography isn't your thing then get an Nokia 701 instead. These are dirt cheap and have the same computing power as the 808PV.
In fact the 701 has a better FM-transmitter antenna so to use as a media FM-streaming device it's probably better than the 808. Also it has a EDoF camera which doesn't hunt for focus when recording video or focus on the wrong things (e.g. raindrops or windows wipers). Which is ideal as a dashcam :-)

Tech enthusist, brand enthusist, hadrware enthusist, and software alike should not be on the same column. You all have different veiws. Before you bash another's belief, Make sure you know what you are talking about. because what you knew isn't always in the know as of NOW.

Nowhere do they say "not ever" so us the people who actually adore Nokia irrespective of hardware will again be happy with a Nokia in the hand and pocket. If you don't like Nokia don't discourage those who do. Til then.

"Nokia reiterates it currently has no plans to manufacture or sell consumer handsets."
Didn't this denial of plans to make a Come-back in mobile making. Also leaving the door open, for a Nokia mobiles in late 2016. But just not today, this year.
Perhaps Microsoft lawyers luring around Nokia's head office, and if they already planning and even constructing phones. Microsoft may suing Nokia for contemplating to breaking the deal between Microsoft and Nokia.
Not even Microsoft can afford bleeding money, trying to sell those Windows phone OS that hardly no one wants.

Rini, 26 Apr 2015Nokia were never good at smart Phones. So they cannot surviv... moreTrue, they failed under the old smartphones, never made a real impact in the smartphone market, and failed again with WP so why should that suddenly change now, when all Android OEMs are struggling uphills?
Symbian was not competitive, and it got worse that all Symbian apps built for Nokia was incompatible with ARMv8, forcing Nokia to launch even the N8 with an old ARM11 (ARMv7) CPU that was already seriously outdated and very capable ARMv8 chipsets were commonplace. Nokia did make an impact in semi-smartphones back before N97 but after that its just a long line of failures. N97 was a big fail, N97 Mini found a niche market but basically failed, N900 was great but sales were very modest, N9 was launched with Elop placing a death sentence on it (N9 was not so great anyway, i had one and cant say much good about it, quite pathetic compared to the N900)
Yep, Nokia has no smartphone greatness to come back to and they are not interested in competing with Xiaomi for unprofitable $79 Ad-droid phones.

In any case, N8 has so weak hardware that installing another OS is out of the question, even with Symbian and the reduced functionality and super simple apps it performs exceptionally slow.
