I did what you suggested by unselected the options in the search and now, and my tablet works again! On Dec 2020 the search and now menu path is: Google settings app > account services > search, assistant & voice > tablet search

I've had Nexus seven since it came out. It NEVER does an update. It is slower than DS.
Have restored it to day one many times. No change. Going to use it for target practice.
Buy a Google Chromebook? Wouldn't take one for free.

I recently pulled my Nexus out of the draw after a couple years to start using it again. I updated to 5.1.1 and what a nightmare. Made my tablet junk. No matter what app I would open, it would freeze up. I did as you said to turn off all tablet searches in google settings and bingo, fixed. Wish I would of found this post sooner, would of saved me many hours of searching for a fix and reading tons of forums and articles that did not help. Thanks again.

It was disappointing to see that the only way to get non-gmail email was through the gmail icon. It was disappointing to see the previous email icon disabled. How can it be re-enabled?

The Android 5.1 OS is old currently. Here Geek Love guy made a comparison video for Android N, Android M and Android 5.1, it is interesting.

My Nexus 7 is now a paperweight. I made the mistake of "upgrading" to Lollipop a year ago and the trouble began. 5.1.1 made it even worse. I really can't use it anymore, not even to play solitare! Using my Moto 6 Android phone and it fast response time makes me want to throw the Nexus in the trash but I can't get it to work long enough to remove my

After a year of slowness"running" (more like crawling) 5.x on my 2012 Nexus 7 I was ready to give up on my device... I decided to give it a try and rollback to KitKat 4.4.4 and wow... Didn't remember it was so fast!

I would recommend to anyone out there with a Nexus 7 2012 to roll back to 4.4.4 ... Not sure why I waited a year... I guess I had hope.. But now that Marshmallow is not planned for my device... No need to keep 5.1.1 on my system.

My nexus 7 2013, battery indicator is faulty since last upgrade always show as low but actually can be fully charged and use for hours without problem. But now with the new upgrade 5.1.1 available the system don't allow upgrade because saying battery is low, but even I connect with power cable the indicator still always low, so I'm stuck cannot proceed with the system upgrade at all message just repeat and repeat. Anyone know how to bypass that message?

In cause of the complete failure that were in my opinion 5.0.2 and 5.1.0 in the asus nexus 7 2012, I am now, not a developer or a programer, but at least a "rooter", because I "root" my device three times always back to 4.4.4. and even it's not to difficult to do it, it's hard to loose everything inside the device. Thanks again.
