Motorola posts Q3 earnings, things looking pretty grim

30 October, 2009
It now came turn for Motorola to announce their financial results for Q3 of the year. While the company as a whole looks healthy enough, given the tough market conditions, the mobile division is still lagging...

Anonymous, 30 Oct 2009Just a simple question to EVERYONE, does someone disagree a... moreInstead of flocking with similar models with minor, if not no differences in specs at all, Moto only concentrated a few models during the year, but that doesn't mean its "camera phone" is bad.

Take the Zn5 for example, its 5mp cam is well known to beat the hell out of many phones with 8mp cam.

And what do the sales figures imply? More sales = more losses?

Anonymous, 30 Oct 2009Just a simple question to EVERYONE, does someone disagree a... moreMay I restate again that the number of megapixels and the picture quality do not dictate the quality of a phone overall. What will you need those megapixel cameras for? Most likely you'll just save your pictures in the gallery, not even planning to actually print them in full resolution.

To address the Motorola cameras suck, surely you mean the lens they use since they do not make the lenses. Last I checked, Nokia does not make the lens either in their high end camera phones either.

Also, one of the best 5MP camera phones never reviewed by this site was the ZN5.

      Link of N95 8GB vs ZN5 - http://phonereport.info/camera-comparison-motozn5-vs-n95-8gb/

The truth is many people comment on how terrible a Motorola phone is when the last Moto phone they probably owned was back in 2005. Look at the picture shootout in the link and you will see for yourself. ZN5 has morphing keypad, 5MP Camera + Xenon Flash + Autofocus, Wifi for $175 USD.

The bias is really staggering. Let us look at the 2 news items:

        1. Sony Ericsson cut down some loss in Q3, but are still way behind - SE announced 193M Euro (284M USD) loss, down from 274M Euro (403M USD)loss in the previous quarter.

        2. Motorola posts Q3 earnings, things looking pretty grim - Motorola announced 183M USD loss, down from 253M USD loss in the previous quarter.

Motorola has a 100 MIL less losses for the Q yet things look grim? Then SE should fold. Less than a percentage point of market to take on 100 MIL more in losses?

        I rather be Motorola.

RIp, 30 Oct 2009Come on... stop blaming others and accept Moto quality is i... moreNo, Moto is doing the right thing by embracing Android, much like SE and ditching winmo altogether. Nokia should take note and dump Symbian and embrace Maemo or Android. As a previous iphone owner, I pretty much gave up on that due to at&t being jackasses and the fact the iphone wasn't really what one hoped for and is geared toward social coffee trolls and kids. Enjoy your crapple, if the iphone doesn't change for 2010, I don't see the fanboys staying o ship much longer and probably jumping bandwagon, a few fart apps can't save what you have to admit is a highly flawed device.

Rip, 30 Oct 2009Sad thing is neither verizon nor Motorola have what it take... moreVerizon and the iphone?? Yeah right, closed source and restrictiveness and prohibiting is so par se whereas Verizon is seeig the big picture. Android is the future, the iphone is so 2007 and at&t is just ****

It would be nice to see more of a range of motorola here on my shelf in australia, at the momemnt ive only got the A3100 WinMo smart phone, its good, its cheap, but the Windows seems to let it down (not the most user friendly at the moment with 6.1)
I had the V6 Maxx and loved it, sure, it did freeze up, but no where near as much as my LG Xenon does that i have now.
I'm sure if moto can bring in more phones, and ones that work, they'll soon be kicking goals again

you guys mock moto, but the fact is that the moto droid is the best thing out this year...the hero cant touch the droid, and dont get me wrong im a huge htc fan...but the droid just beats the hero/magic/g1/mytouch3g(all the htc android phones)...its faster, better screen, better design...only problem is that its on verizon, but supposedly a gsm version is coming out...as for the iphone, i dont expect it to be able to face up to the hd2(as long as the hd2 has reasonable pricing) and what about the n900(i know its not really the same division as iphone) but yeah the iphone is getting dated.

Anonymous, 30 Oct 2009Just a simple question to EVERYONE, does someone disagree a... moreTheir cameras are OK, fast and with great color/contrast - at least judging by my two Motorolas. However, they have nothing above 5MP (which I don't even need) and people will always complain because of something even though they make perfectly good phones. I've been trying to destroy my Moto for two years now (no success) so I had no reason to get a new phone. If I did, I'd get a Moto again.

Just a simple question to EVERYONE, does someone disagree about that Moto's cameras sucks?

If it wasn't because of that, then they might actually have outsold SE (hint: SE's heavy-hitter this season was Satio, if Moto would beat it, what would you think would happen to the sales?).

Just saying... Moto once had a nice camera... in 2007 or something... but they need to step up now, before it'll be too late!

These earnings do not take into account the new CLIQ, Droid and other devices on the horizon. Give Moto a chance, their hardware is excellent and a lot more versatile than the competition.

Well maybe moto should stop milking the razr style phones for 5 years. Then come out with new style phones expecting to be back up!

Samsung is milking the touch style phones like tocco, but they also offer higher end phones like the omnia series.

I'm surprised moto decided to come back to the mobile market, the way they have been the past several years.
