Samsung to pay 1.3 billion US dollars for Qualcomm patents

08 November, 2009
While some companies make their way to the top using others' achievements, there are still ones that are willing to pay for patent licenses without mumbling too much. Like Samsung who have just...

If they pay so much, they could buy better GPS receivers with working ephemeris. My I8000 GPS is terrible comparing to the external, small receiver from Qualcomm, that starts within 5 sec.

Qualcomm has held those patents for years, Samsung has been using the technology for years.

It must be due to Nokia settling their legal battle with Qualcomm earlier this year with the payment of $1.7 Billion.

Deep space bar, 09 Nov 2009It claims that apple paid qualcomm So we don't really know... moreWow, this one's over 11 years old:

"MARKHAM, Ontario - January 7, 1998 -- In an agreement designed to enhance the quality of voice audio over the Internet, Apple Computer, Inc. announced today it has licensed QUALCOMM's PureVoice technology to be included in QuickTime 3.0. QuickTime 3.0 is the latest version of the Company's award-winning, industry-standard software architecture for creating and publishing digital media for Mac OS and Windows."

"Targeted for Internet use, the integration of PureVoice enhances QuickTime with high quality, low data rate audio compression for speech, enabling quality Internet playback on modems as slow as 14.4kbps. PureVoice technology brings enhanced spoken word audio while reducing file size and transmission time ten-fold when compared with common audio formats such as Wave. A typical one minute voice mail message stored in a Wave file would require over seven minutes to transmit using 28.8kbps modem. The same voice mail compressed into a QuickTime Movie file using PureVoice technology would take less than 45 seconds to download, allowing the listener to hear the message as it is transferred. While PureVoice can deliver quality speech in as little as 900 bytes per second, the technology can scale to achieve better quality audio by applying a higher data rate."

Maybe Apple don't use Nokia's stuff at all.

Apple has had agreements with Qualcomm for years:-

Isn't Nokia using some of those formats, I wonder how much they pay Apple?

"MARKHAM, Ontario—December 19, 2003—Apple® today announced QuickTime® 6.5, the industry’s first mainstream media architecture for the creation and playback of rich multimedia content for both CDMA 2000 and GSM wireless networks. Expanding its support for mobile multimedia standards to include both 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) and 3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 (3GPP2), QuickTime 6.5 enables users to share high-quality video, audio and text across the two predominant wireless networking technologies worldwide. QuickTime 6.5 will add to the existing popularity of QuickTime 6, which has already had over 175 million downloads in less than 18 months since its release.

“QuickTime 6.5 delivers extensive support for the 3GPP and 3GPP2 standards, including Advanced Audio Coding (AAC), Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR) and Qualcomm Code Excited Linear Predictive (QCELP) audio codecs, MPEG-4 and H.263 video codecs, 3G Timed Text, native .3gp and .3g2 file formats as well as support for Movie Fragments, which provide mobile operators and content providers with the advantages of real-time streaming within their existing web infrastructure.”"

                                [deleted post]So?

No-one knows what Nokia wants from Apple except Nokia and Apple.

Apple paid Qualcomm, Nokia paid Qualcomm and now Samsung has paid Qualcomm.

I'd say the only reason that Samsung paid Qualcomm now is that the legal battles which were raging between Qualcomm and Nokia over many years across Europe and the US was only recently settled with Nokia paying Qualcomm $1.7Billion.

As I said it's up to a court to decide or Nokia and Apple to reach an agreement BOTH parties are happy with.

This is a normal fact of life in the technical industry, expect Apple to countersue Nokia.

Anonymous, 08 Nov 2009Nokia had to pay Qualcomm $US1.7 after years of court cases... moreThat's $US1.7 billion that Nokia had to pay Qualcomm who also own GSM patents.

Nokia hasn't proved that it's patents are essential to GSM phones, they haven't had to, they just got together with the other phone manufacturers at the time and agreed on who gets what share.

Their patents have never been tested and they may be colluding with the traditional phone manufacturers to offer them cheaper licensing deals.

Obviously Apple as a new comer decided that Nokia wasn't offering them a "fair" deal.

A court will decide or an agreement will be reached that's how business works.

Expect Apple to countersue Nokia, they have quite a broad range of patents in their portfolio.

Apple has already paid Qualcomm licensing fees (and Ericsson), they also use licensed chips.

Nokia must have been too greedy in their negotiations with Apple, who are already paying $50 per iPhone in licensing fees.

Maybe they don't use any of Nomia's stuff, maybe they want to be treated the same as other phone manufacturers.

We'll have to wait until Nokia proves it in court or a settlement is reached.

btw Qualcomm is one of the largest companies in the mobile phone industry and they don't make a single phone.
