Its price, marketing and poor devices since htc one x. Even their budget phones are way overpriced. Samsung can get away with 50 iterations of a device every year, HTC can't, yet they still have 20 or so variants of 'desrie' series now, and even the flagship has some variants.

Their marketing is a fail as well, their adverts don't even show what the phone does. Remember when Iron Man just walked around then finally came to the conclusion 'Heres To Change', Well looks like nothings changed. Being Quietly Brilliant was better. That's what they should've stuck to, quietly going about their things let the final product do the talking, instead of them hyping stuff up and constantly failing to deliver.

just because the m7 and m8 were successful they weren't perfect and Htc fail to evolve and improve those phones .Personally the body to screen ration was the the major turn down followed buy the poor battery capacity throughout the range although the UI could be smarter and htc could have done better job updating older phones.
I just wish my lg G3 had those htc boom sound front facing speakers of course keeping the over all size and the same screen,

After HTC made a frying pan called htc m9, no wonder their smartphones sales are dropping.

Problem with HTC is they are not following the trend. In 2015, we need a phone with better screen/ratio, bezeless, thin, the most impresive camera. HTC M9 doesn't have any of this.

HTC have not learned from their past mistakes, in my opinion they fail because of the following, marketing (older devices mainly, that then followed by substandard flagship hardware and poor tech resulting in alienation of further customers, and to keep things on the downhill they decived to use very similar design features across 3 models, m7, m8, m9, yes there are differences but HTC is no apple or samsung so cannot keep just upgrading minor design changes, they also priced some of their devices outside of most other flagships at the time, save for samsung again this was not such a great move.
if they want to be successful again they need to bring out the next flagship with killer flagship specs, new design language and looks, some new features not just the odd gimmicky camera module, they need to be priced competative below the likes of samsung or apple to gain traction and they need to market the hell out of their devices and really sell them as worthwhile pieces of kit

I also disagree with the common misconception (in tech articles) that HTC was failing due to marketing: their weak devices since the HTC One X have always been the problem!

Make a good product and promotion will usually work with little push needed.

Make poor devices and it won't matter how many awkward commercials and famous movie stars you hire.

Now if you make better products but dont make them available worldwide, you're just addind insult to injury.

the reason for htc downfall is the pricing. the price of the phones is too high, can get the same thing with other manufacturer at lower price plus the battery sucks big time.

Why have so many variations HTC ? One cheap phone for the masses and one flagship phone with a choice of normal screen size and one with a large screen size e.g. Apple iPhone 6 and 6 plus. I would be happy with the HTC 9+ but I can't get one in my country!!! Why limit your market by limiting your sales area ? A global release or don't bother !!! m9 was an expensive cheap phone, the m9 should have had the same chipset as the 9+ and the finger scan. The m9+ should have been a global release !!!

Samsung and Apple will always dominate smartphones. And Samsung will dominate robotics, drones, CPU/RAM/flash computer chips, SSDs, monitors, refrigerators, printers, aircraft engines, shipbuilding, electric batteries for cars, etc, etc.

Samsung is the largest technology company in the world when taking into account revenues+assets+profits+equities.

Apple is the 3rd largest after Samsung Group and Volkswagen AG.

their problem is they shoot them selves in the feet, like the one mini 2, barely a year old and it's EOL as it's not getting lollipop, so people who've bought that aren't going to want to get another HTC, also 2 years of the ultrapixel camera which didn't work the for M7 so why did they bother with the M8 the same with the duo camera which is just a gimmick which isn't that great, and the camera issues with the M9 didn't help like they should have just used an exmor R sensor.

I was an HTC fan since 2007, gave up on them after they constantly failed on the camera. I jumped to LG and bought G4, best decision ever! You made it with your own hand HTC, everybody warned you and gave you advices what needs to be done but you ignored us all!

Only management and share holders to blame for weak, greedy strategy combined with tactics because they are the ones taking key decisions. It;s very sad because company had enormous potential, talented designers and engineers. I doubt there will be any drastic change in direction and most likely administration or simple buy out by some electronic giant.

Th HTC M9 often isn't even considered in flagship comparisons on many sites, mainly because crappy camera.

If you compare its photos - especially low-light - with the Galaxy S6 or LG G4 there's an enormous difference in favor of the S6 and G4.

You can't expect success with a phone that lacks essential ability - making good quality photos, which is one of the most often used feature.
