I would just buy a good Otterbox, Lifeproof, or a Survivor case. My Dad has used Iphone's with durable cases and the phone has survived the abuse. When I take them out of the case it looks brand new like day I put it in the case. When I gave my Dad flip phones they would only last about 3 to 6 months of abuse. The only flip phone that is still around is an unlocked Rugby 2 that my Dad uses sometimes just for calls.

Based on claimed ruggedness, this phone is tougher than the Samsung Galaxy s6 Active and Kyocera Hydro Life.
Beware that mil-std is just a list of suggested tests. Unless the manufacturer specifies the detailed test information or a third-party tester, claiming "mil-std certified" alone means nothing.

The S6 active is no competition, that device is not made for such people and environments, but for people who just like to have a rugged phone.

It's funny how this article is intended to cause a hype here, yet s6, in all aspects, beats the crap out of this "rugged" phone.

            *meant to say s6 Active.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Active can handle a similar amount of abuse, having similar size, but its hardware is so much better! 4.7 vs 5.1 inch screen, 960x540 vs QHD screen. The advantage Cat S40 has is microSD slot, if its important for you. I've been using LG G2 for over a year now and didn't miss microSD slot ever. Oh, and availability issue - SGS6a is simply not available outside of USA...

The phone is built for businesses and industry that have environments that are "punishing" for normal phones. Because of this, the amount of units they will sell will automatically be a lot lot lower than a mainstream device, meanings that costs are spread very thinly and don't economies of scale (etc). This is why it is expensive.

for now spec-wise outdoor is the best S6active, then S5a (meaning without shell). Is there any other brand to come with a rugged smartphone made out of flagship device? Sony f.ex. got ipx but some glass with that...
