Anonymous, 21 Aug 2015Yeah, but it also implies that if you have insane amounts o... moreBut it you are a pro or power user working with RAM intense applications, then it's a bad thing.

So neither solution is best for all situations.

And in mobie devices, you dont want things that you are not going to use, to preload in to the memory, loading the CPU while doing so, and thus draining the battery.

And even if RAM prices are going down, it's not that cheap yet, so that makers throw in a lot of extra just for the sake of it. It does drive prices up or margins down.

So I would say the windows way is still better today. And will be for a very long time for those users that use RAM intense applications.

It will support pen and run android apps too! (Windows 10 will supposedly support Android apps natively!)

Adi T., 21 Aug 2015Yes, that's how Linux works. And that's the reason why you ... moreYeah, but it also implies that if you have insane amounts of ram (8gigs and up) everything is cached in RAM and you basically have no loading times.

Obviously it's a bad system in low ram situations, but the future seems to be opposite than that (RAM gets cheaper and cheaper). Imagine how fast a 16GB tablet/android phone would be.

Everything would be happening in an instant...
I prefer this because RAM plays a primary role in Linux, while in Windows everything from 8 gigs and up matters less and less (we enter a stage of diminishing retuns). In Linux there is no ceiling, the more you up the ram the better the performance ... simple as that (and eventually you reach insane performance, have you ever worked on a 32gb linux machine? It's like out of this world...)

Core M won't function in a 6mm thin body, end of story, rumor dead, even if I REALLY wish it was true, the best possibility is this is gauging interest by leaking hypothetical info, and then downgrading the specs to technically possible levels, even if it means just slightly more thickness and/or putting an Atom and lowering the resolution to 1080P/max 2K.

And that's the reason why you get lower performance in Linux/Android than you get with Windows. When you open a new app, guess what: the system needs to clear parts of the RAM cache and "give it" to the app.

For eg., if you want an Android device to run without a hiccup (no lag, no restarts, no app crashes) that device should have more RAM than storage. That's why Android lags on 4 GB of RAM, while Windows manages to run better than Android, even on 1 GB of RAM.

Without touch optimized apps Windows "tablets" are a form of laptop. They are used as laptops (desktop apps mostly), they're thought as laptops.

What *may* have changed now is Nadella's promise for native Android-app support on Windows, if that happens it would be for the best. Both Desktop and tablet use side by side...

There is a reason why android/linux uses all available ram. It's called disk caching and actually makes Ram participant in the device's performance (unlike in -say- Windows, where Ram is strictly used for things you -currently- use...)

Not great for 3D modelling or video-editing, I guess. Should still be doable, but definately not optimal.
