Meizu PRO 5 paves the way for a new sub-brand, launch scheduled for September 25

12 September, 2015
Two versions are rumored, one with Exynos 7420 SoC, the other debuting the Helio X20 with deca-core CPU.

Another 5.5' device- just what we need... Why can't they differentiate a little? E.g. make a great 4,7' device? And maybe take some clients from Apple?

Umbilical Noose, 13 Sep 2015Like I said before process size doesn't really matter with ... morei dont know , but saying process size doesn't matter kind of disturbs me. process size matters a lot , admittedly it is harder on a photo lithography stand point, normally worked with negative exposure. but the reason process size matters , is more transistors in the same given area, a smaller chip for same power, lower power consumption(equating to less heat) which also in turn lets a manufacturer clock the chip at higher speeds. there is actually a long list one could give on manufacturing techniques. but then again i got out of the thankless job of engineering in the semiconductor business 6 years ago. so who knows maybe they found a way to design cores where process doesn't matter.

regs, 13 Sep 2015Even if TSMC managed to switch to 20nm, it's still not 14nm... moreLike I said before process size doesn't really matter with A72. About the GPU, from the top of my head I remember that T760 churned ~200 GFLOPS and since T880 is about 1.8x more powerful than T760 we can assume it will generate about ~100 GFLOPS. On a resolution of 1920x1080 that will be more than enough unless we are comparing to Apple A9.
The best thing is, Helio X20 can run all ten cores at once and it has better efficiency thanks to Mediatek latest tech.
Oh, I forgot. it won't throttle either :p

T760 MP8 running at 773MHz is still more powerful than T880 MP4 tuning at 600MHz. Not talking about lack of NFC support. 7420 also has much wider memory channel.

Besides it looks like process size doesn't matter anymore with A72. The problem was present with A57 but TSMC fixed it.

Meizu did not intend to go international and China is China, some features won't fit in its own market. Another thing they did poorly is the quality control - yellow screen, broken sim holder, buzzing 3.5mm, and many many hardware problems there are pages on many Chinese android forums. Xiaomi, on the other hand, aren't much better, the new Redmi Note2 sounds great on paper, but they lied about the screen being made by SHARP, and everything crappy manufactured. sub$200 perfect phone is no way to be true.

Not talking that they abandoned international support. Flyme 2 though was very stable and most optimized shell ever on Android. Looks like they fired quality expensive coders and hired cheap students instead.

But people turns away from Meizu for another reasons - lack of european LTE support, lack of NFC and giant sizes.

But yes, unfortunatelly they all are totally insane and are stuck, constantly copying themselves. New brands, new models - they are all the same and targeted at the exact same crowd.

"...a bid to differentiate its true flagship from its almost-as-good-but-not-quite-there..."

Funny, I thought ALL Chinese devices are "almost-as-good-but-not-quite-there" >:->

Anyway, creating a new brand seems to be a trend amongst Chinese handset-manufacturers instead of creating good, non-compromized devices on their main brand.

                                Here some ideas:
Stop using ridiculous high resolution screens.
                                - 4K on a 50" TV: Yes.
                                - 4K on a 5"smartphone: No!
I'd rather have 60fps in 720p or 1080p on my game than 15fps in UHD.

Use better camera's and create better camera-software. Better doesn't mean "more crappy insignificant features" but better quality. I'd rather have an 8MP-camera taking perfect photo's than a 20MP-camera taking garbage!

Don't make these devices so bloody thin! Use the extra thickness to provide more cooling space and larger batteries. And for god's sake NO PROTRUDING camera's... not even 1mm! And if you really must.. then protect that camera with the best materials possible (e.g. gorillaglass, saphire).

A proper notification light! Not a puny blip that you can't see without a magnifying glass or such a dim-light (I'm looking at you Samsung!) that the "notification" gets unnoticed!

A LOUD loudspeaker! Helloooooo... I want to HEAR IT when someone calls me. I don't buy a PHONE to get reachable where- and whenever I am, only to get all those bloody missed calls because the manufacturing-fools placed the speaker at the most awful place or the speaker isn't loud enough. And, yes... if I spend +500bucks on a phone I place it in a leather pouch, in my coat or backback or whatever. You must consider this when you design these phones!

Oh and stop using crappy LED-flashes. I know that some phones have ultra-bright LED-lights but a lot of those Chinese don't. They use the cheapest crappy LED-lamp they can find. Which means that no 2 devices have the same LED-light-intensity and that they are too dim to even lit an object 10cm away from the phone.

Also... perhaps making 3 GOOD (1x high-end, 1x mid & 1x low-end) devices instead of 30 crappy ones (Samsung AGAIN looking at you!)!

These are just a few tips! But as usual these stupid manufacturers don't read or care what their consumers have to say. Meh :-(

Helio X20 is pointless. Too much CPU power, too little GPU power. 7420 is well adjusted. And 28 nm vs 14 nm.
