OS X El Capitan now available for download

01 October, 2015
Apple has released the final version of OS X El Capitan on the Mac App Store. Those with compatible machines, that would be most Macs sold in recent years, should head over to the store and download the free update, which is just over 6GB in size. The default and simplest method is to just update your existing OS X installation but you could do a fresh install by extracting the installation file, burning it to a USB drive, and booting from it.

Anonymous, 02 Oct 2015Proffesionals who use OS X (or any other OS as well) don't ... moreI agree, but not all of them. It depends on the person, but I do understand that most people don't care. If all else is working properly, I'll spend a few hours to customize the user interface, remove things that are getting in my way, make things cleaner, more efficient and pleasing to the eye. For example, personally I hate animations and I've seen Mac users asking how to disable them too, that's unnecessary bloat. Steve Jobs himself said that the user interface has to look so good that "you wanna lick it". If something is bothering me, why would I have to keep looking at it? User environment contributes to efficiency.

doodoo, 02 Oct 2015oops.. missed one word: "so, whats make mac special? pc ca... moreOne thing for developers: installing and running Xcode without effort and then focusing their effort to develop iOS and Mac apps and get profit.

A Mac can dualboot Windows easily through bootcamp, but PC needs to be built specifically to run Hackintosh, and need more effort and usually have some unstabilities in some Hackintosh cases.

Also for people who are trapped in Apple ecosystem it will be hard to switch to PC due to the investment they've made.

And many more reasons hard to understand by non Mac/Apple users.

doodoo, 02 Oct 2015oops.. missed one word: "so, whats make mac special? pc ca... morexcode... windows cannot use.

If you want to submit for App store, tough luck, you need Mac with OSX.

For programmers, don't gimp, just get a mac and program from the start, you will thank me for it. You can code in anything on a mac.

      Hackitosh BS don't believe it.

And Mac is best to control and manage all those Window / Linux boxes. Direct ssh from terminal. Standard commands. You try Putty using Windows.. Winscp .. good if 1 remote host.. when you deal with over 100, you will cry.

Rocking with a rMBP with full day battery life. and your productivity go through the roof.. while you see your windoze counter parts, click click mouse click click all the way with no productivity.. and stuck in 1 Window.. even in Win10.. its cumbersome compared to mission control.

But yeah.. for the common people, anything will do. Even an iPad is enough. Just like a 500GB spinning hard disk is more then enough.. do not need no 500GB SSD... nor do you need 16GB ram.. just need 4GB.. you just close some tabs, and keep going.

And of course if you hate Apple, and want to have absolutely nothing to do with their technology, then yeah you do well without OSX also.

Koel, 02 Oct 2015There's no such great improvement in the OS just for name s... moreIt's under the hood improvement that's usually Apple software update brings to OS X.
There are only minor UI redesign (the transition to flat UI is an exception, but it's still gradual transition on OS X compared to iOS) and visible features improvement/addition.

I updated my friends Macbook Pro on Wednesday evening by about 1am it would not properly install and was stuck in a loop. On the following morning I contacted apple as him via the apple uk site as he is not good on phones and with computer setup. I had two senior Apple people help me to erase and reinstall Yosemite and then I re downloaded and re installed El Capitan this time successfully. I was told I was not the only person who had experienced the problem. I thanked all of them for there help in sorting out the problem. They also said the HD had a fault on it which would have been fixed by the erase and reinstall. Apple charged nothing for the help. Cheers Apple.
