Tethering made easy: SIMFi is a SIM card with built-in Wi-Fi router

12 February, 2010
Some mobile phones can do Wi-Fi tethering, others need to connect to the PC Suite for Internet sharing and some just can't do it, period. But what if the SIM card in the phone could do it all by itself? Sagem Orga and...

Looks like all Nokia-S60 does this with joikuspot app already.
Need to wait and see what good it does compared to the app based Internet sharing to hardware based sharing.
More over the networks should handle the bandwidth when most of the users get ready to ditch mifi's and dongles for SIMFI.

What good wil it be. Turn your phone into a broadcast antenna. First Bluetooth, then FM Transmitter, now this - WiFi router.
There'll be a day that people can cook a turkey just by their phone.
              Microwave, anyone???

LOL. As soon as I saw the article I was like, "my phone already has a wifi router built in", and right after scrolling down the page I see, "HTC HD2 owners are probably smiling right now...". Hahaha I love gsm arena.

buddy, in the phone, the radio component that does the connectivity via gsm or umts, are permanently embedded in the phone hardware. The sim is just a subscription module, and has nothing to do with the cell communication. The sim holds an unique number, called imsi, that distinctly sets the device in the network. So, the radio gsm or 3g communication does not have to go thru the sim, but thru the phone. If a wifi router would have its hardware hosted in the sim, the phone would need to permanently talk via its cell radio module, for the data connections, AND via the sim wifi module, thru the sim serial connection that is not fast enough, with the current phones. Besides, where is the wifi software and who is going to control the communication? If all the sim card does is host a wifi server then it is no big deal, because of power consumption, that is quite high, sim slot position, that is often hidden and screened enough to hinder the wifi communication, and size of antenna, that would make the range of just several meters. So, who is not an engineer, cannot ask himself essential questions when it comes to understanding the difficulties of mobile device designing. Many of the comment-wannabe's are hunting for the first places in the post list, but will stay as dumb as they are, and offend legitimate readers. Be smart, not stupid.
