HTC One A9 will be a lot more expensive in Europe than in the US

20 October, 2015
We didn't know it at the time, but a few weeks ago with its new Nexus devices Google started a trend. And not a good one if you happen to live in Europe. See, the new Nexus 5X, for example, happens to be a lot more expensive in Europe than it is in the US.

The same problem seems to apply to Googles Oculus Rift. Hopefully HTCs Vive price which will officially be announced next week won't have the same issues. Problem is that while we as european consumers have the option between many smartphone producers and aren't relient on Google/HRC, this does not apply to VR-headsets as of yet because HTC and Google are the only main players.

Why would you care? Boycut both companies in Europe and lets see what happens.

I spotted the 16GB/2GB RAM model in a Belgian webshop for € 599. It's so strange that it's that much more expensive. Shame, too, because I was really considering getting this one instead of a new iPhone. I've always liked HTC phones, but for that price it's just not worth it. I could have lived with them just taking the dollar price and not converting it to euro, as happens with so many products nowadays (iPhone 6s base model costs $ 749 but is € 749 in Europe - which is actually $ 832) but if it's going to be priced the same as a Galaxy S6, I don't think many units will be sold over here.

Their thoughts (and not only theirs) are probably "Europeans are retarded and rich, they will buy it anyway". Or something along those lines.

Having a slightly higher costs because of VAT is one thing, costing about a third more is another. Or another example: a pair of headphones that costs ~190€ in Japan costs 400+€ in Europe. You can't possibly be telling me that it costs about 200€ to get them imported, or that the VAT is 50%

Primarily because we include taxes which the US doesn't. Still, taking it at an average 20% that should make it $480, possibly round that up to $500 for the effort of having to adjust - not $664! The Nexus did the same thing, went way above the taxable amount... it's doodoo. DOO-DOO I TELL YOU!

€600 for a phone with a Snapdragon 6-Series SoC inside? No, I am afraid not.
I can buy a Snapdragon 615 powered phone for €300. and a phone with a Snapdragon 801 for €400. HTC is making a big mistake letting Europe behind. Europe is a very demanding continent, but if the clients like the product they will stick with the brand. USA clients swap brands and opinions very quickly.

I would hardly consider buying it for 399$ for such potato-phone, why would anyone in Europe with their sane mind buy it for so much more? It's a device with sub-300$ specs, with the Amoled screen as the only redeeming factor.

New trend?? Phones and electronics in general have costed significantly more in Europe then US for years. Hard to understand since everything is made in Asia. I remember a while ago I wanted to get a nexus 5 in Norway where I live, it costed about 500 usd, while you could have it for something like 250 in the US. The only phones that seem to be reasonably priced in Europe are windows phones.

Same goes with the Nexus. Nexus are prices higher than the US price but not as high as iPhones.
