The company has a lot of divisions and by layoffs and selling assets have been helpful lately. We'll see what the future might bring upon Sony.

New investment in Thailand for mobile division and acquisition of Toshiba's sensor business clearly indicates that Sony is going to be here for long because both investments fall in the mobile phone business and in business, u do not step out of the investment in mere an year after the investment. It just doesn't work that way.
Way to go SONY.

For everyone wondering wh... moreSony has many businesses, If they are selling their mobile business so why they have invested in Thailand for new smartphone manufacturing plant ? Sony is the leading company right now in image sensor business particularly in mobile cam segment and they want to maintain this lead that's why they are buying this business. If you ever check their quarter end financial reports so you come to know that their image sensor business is completely different subsidiary, they even post its own profit and loss summary. They have created some different segments, like gaming and entertainment business, financial services, image sensor business and smartphones. I hope you got my point.

Can't say about HTC but the BlackBerry is using a Sony sensor with ois and they have upgraded it themselves (also known as Sony mx230-s) in BlackBerry priv

For everyone wondering why does acquiring Toshiba sensor business will be followed by selling Sony's handset division, because this means that the company wants to focus more on a specific business and buy that business using the money that it would get after selling one of its troubled subsidiary.
A clear example of that was Nokia when it acquired the share of Siemens in NSN (formally known as Nokia and Siemens Network), and then followed by selling Nokia's devices and services division.

Please GSMA, PLEASE explain how sony buying Toshiba's sensor bussiness could mean Sony is more likely to pull out of the mobile industry. Just stop it already, it's getting annoying.

Second last paragraph makes no sense, because sony has many different business, image sensor business is completely different sony business as compare to it's mobile business, it is like that sony has reduced the prices of playstation 4 just to increase the sales as its mobile business is not going well. C'mon man be realistic.

Now they will make almost all camera phone sensors. Good move, I actually for once believe they will make it, I cant say the same for HTC and blackberry

Don't understand part of this article, Sony just invested in a phone manufacturing plant, why would buying another sensor factory make any difference in the future of their smartphones? They probably want patents that Toshiba own and the business is probably secondary. Or they're doing so well that they need more production and a factory already tooled will come in real handy.

Sony might be struggling to restructure but I think they'll manage. Better than HTC and LG at the very least.
