After having outed a couple of "Innovator Edition" Gear VR headsets in the past year or so, Samsung has officially announced its mass-market offering in this space back in September.

Aries, 11 Nov 2015time for a visit from the logic fairy. In order to use thi... moreYour lack of knowledge is so annoying.
First, of course the phones are not designed for this, this was designed for the phones! So much for a fairy logic. And you're comparing this with the Cardboard?! Lol Just because they both are VR accessories doesn't mean that they're at the same league! And then you tried to make a point that the Rift is somewhat cheaper?? Lol I just can't.. If you counted the price of the phone for this, why didn't you count the price of the PC setup that would be enough to play descent VR?! Still think that the Rift is cheaper?? What kind of logic fairy are you??!
The Gear VR is made with collaboration with Oculus themselves, so what made you think that there won't be any support for it. You obviously have no idea about this!
And you didn't just compared cheap tablets and phones paired with the Google Cardboard with this, did you?! How ignorant cab someone be. There's a reason why the VR experience with this is the best mobile VR experience available right now (read the reviews! For crying out loud), biggest part is the fact that the Samsung flagships compatible to this all have the highest resolution Super Amoled displays and have some of the most capable hardware in mobile realm! You can't seriously just suggested that cheap tablets and phones have capable enough hardware to give enjoyable VR experience, can you? lol
And you didn't just say that the VR experience with this is just "slightly more comfortable" than with the Cardboard, did you?? :D Just try using the cardboard for more than ten minutes and tell us just how it's only slightly less comfortable than using the Gear VR. Not to mention that the cardboard doesn't have access to the best and most robust VR store that is the Oculus store. Sorry to say this but your logic doesn't sound like any logic at all. :)

Big Daddy, 10 Nov 2015100 dollars for just a plastic case with 2 mirrors ? lol ... morePlease be educated so you can stop embarrassing yourself. Gear VR is the best VR accessory available on the market. And it has its own ecosystem with Oculus VR which is much better that anything Google has to offer.

Anonymous, 11 Nov 2015And where are you going to get the lenses? My bad. Buy a google cardboard assemply and a blueprint. Then use everything but the cardboard from the google kit. Then they'll have the lenses, velcro patches, etc. that they'll need. still around $80 less than this

Aries, 11 Nov 2015time for a visit from the logic fairy. In order to use thi... moreI will also point out that a cheap 7" tablet (under $100) with a slightly modified Google Glass lenses setup ($10 on ebay) with splashtop (free on android) linked to your home PC can do pretty much everything the Samsung Gear can do for a tiny fraction of the price and thanks in no small part to the adaptability of the Google glass system can be used with virtually ANY phone to do the same darn thing.

If you own a Samsung and want a slightly more comfortable virtual experience then feel free to blow your cash but honestly its a pair of lenses in shiny box and not much more.

time for a visit from the logic fairy.
In order to use this product you have to first shell out for a pretty high end smart phone that was in no way designed for this (a moot point but none the less) which in order to use you have to shell out another $100...

              ....two little words, "Google Cardboard"

Now I could rant that products designed for the proposed Virtual revolution are going to be significantly cheaper than paying out for a top of the line phone (roughly $800) and your carrier fees to place it in a device that you will then hang on your face...
              ...think about that...
...now consider you can buy an Occulus Rift v2 for under $300 with full community support and the ability to play your existing PC game collection in glorious 3D

OR you can download a streaming app such as splashtop into your massively expensive toy that has next to no comparative support and limited viability as a virtual device due in no small part to your phones need to remain a phone

Anonymous, 10 Nov 2015cheap copies that work the same? can you name me some? and ... moreI have a VRbox which is OK but not the best. Does the job though. There are more premium offering but they come into the same price range as this Samsung variant. Anyone tried out Trinus with PC games? If they manage to up the quality and framerate it'd be pretty awesome but it's still fun to run around Skyrim as it is currently but it's been a while and a few updates since I last had a go.

There are not mirrors, we call it lenses. However... Gear VR has an integrated tracking processor (gyroscope, magneto, etc.) runs at 1000Hz vs 100Hz phone's one to make the experience smooth enough, it has some touch buttons and more. It is a little more complicated than those pieces of plastic.
