Iphones are not that much cheaper compared to Samsung. There was a Forbes article that stated that because Samsung makes pretty much everything for their phone. It is cheaper for them to make their phone then iPhone. iPhone has to source out all their parts.

Why would a smartphone manufacturer make an accessory for a competing smartphone?

For eg ( and I quote GSMArena here) : A single Twister core from 6s Plus(1.8 Ghz) provides the same performance as 8 Cortex-A53 cores from M2 Note( 1.4 Ghz).
A mobile OS is not the same as a laptop OS . Priority is usually given to user input here and there aren't many apps that utilize the multi core architectures with a significant benefit. Those who do , don't signify as much a performance jump as the difference in the number of cores would suggest ( case in point being MX player).
I am no expert , but 4 optimized cores with rapidly scalable frequency and low heat dissipation would be an ideal configuration for performance as well as battery life , IMHO .

Having many cores for different loads can increase efficiency because cores can be optimized for specific frequencies.
In general, for performance, it does not make a big difference if you have either 4 or 10 cores, especially for games.
No game will actually use more than 4 cores.
For just normal use cases and pure performance in one app you are using at the moment, 2 cores with very high performance would almost always be better than 10 cores with low performance.
A good design with many cores can save energy though.
I would suggest you don't look for the number of cores.
For using the phone, most of the time the memory performance makes a bigger difference ;)
For gaming you should take a snapdragon 600+, most other manufacturers have pretty slow graphics (which you don't need for normal apps).
