If you want to be sure to get the update that matches the software on your Milestone (depending on country), here is the Motorola Software Update site:

It's not available there for all countries yet, but they are adding them asap.

search for that one; not the .31 version from this page...
install these SBF files with RSD Lite; connect via USB to pc and startup moto by keeping key-up (D-Pad) pressed together with power for some time, then release. Switch to RSD program on PC, and select .34 file.
To root it:

follow that to install - after you installed .34, the small SHOLS_U2_01.14.0_recovery_only.sbf should be installed.
then, get the mentioned zipfile, rename to update.zip, put it on root dir of your SD card and reboot keeping cam key pressed. select update.zip file and you're ready to go... root rights.

maybe this will help SE X10 out with their lazy ability to provide the phone with Android 1.6 come on SE stop been slow and providing old technology.

Think this is the leaked update. i tried doing the update.zip method via recovery mode still not working
