Nokia still owns all the patents and just licenses them to Microsoft (the deal included a 10 year license). It did include phone designs, of course.
And oh, of course MS didn't buy Nokia. They bought just the phone business and related services.

Lumia smartphones obviously owned by Microsoft since then. Nokia Lumia was merely a partnership between those two company. Anyway, LG Nexus 5X clearly copied Nokia Lumia. I had seen many Lumia back in 2014 with similar design. Yes, Microsoft made them. That is a fact that you cannot deny since the design had been used before no matter who owned it first. Microsoft automatically own all design and patent from Nokia after they bought Nokia anyway. So, technically speaking Nexus 5X did copied Microsoft.

My problem with lumia phones is not the OS primarily, but the fact that M$ keeps making phones that are below standards in terms of hardware compared to other phones of the same category. The phones are Huge and heavy, have outdated processors, and mediocre standby battery usage. I think they are failing not because WP is bad, but because they refuse to address the simple points that don't actually require great resources to be fixed and are just a turn off for anyone purchasing a phone in general that would drive people away.
