New lawsuit claims Apple slows down older iPhones on iOS 9

30 December, 2015
A new lawsuit is demanding $5M in damages from Apple for intentionally slowing down performance of legacy iPhones. The plaintiff claims that Apple has been engaging in deceptive business practices of purposely slowing down 100 members’ iPhone 4S’s.

Be a bit clever will you people ? If ios 9 is too big for iphone 4s, then why release it for 4s ? Apple should know this since they only have 7 iphone (4s, 5, 5s, 5c, 6, 6s, 6s+) devices to test unlike any other manufacturers, who by the way have tons of devices they themselves wouldn't bother updating the software for mid-low devices (I'm looking at you samesung).

Apple clearly bring their marketing skills to a new lows.

And seriously, you people should stop fanboy-ing a certain manufacturer since they only care about your hard-earned cash! They have their eyes fixed on your wallet so STOP caring so much about something that doesn't really care about you! Get a life! Real life!

AnonD-361638, 30 Dec 2015Then why they r gone to Court??? LolThat kind of surprises me as well. Last thing I checked, most rich people won't really have the time or patience for that - they'll just buy a new phone and carry on with life.

Then again, not every iPhone user was born with a silver spoon. That may probably explain a few things.

lmao i can't stop laughing, still thinking android is shit? Like really, no ability to cancel os update on iphone? wow. Well to be honest, slowdowns mostly are in android too, but you can install update or skip. Custom Os almost never makes your phone slow, but yeah, older OS makes phone faster overall, but newier version adds a lot features and fixes so yeah.

Now I would love to see Apple being made to take some "perceptible" action in this regard and not grease the plaintiff with lots of out of court dough.

Old hardware can't keep up with new software, simple as that. iPhone 5 runs perfectly on iOS 9.2 3 years after release. The performance gap between iPhone 4s and iPhone 5 is just too big.

In my opinion Apple has only a handful of devices and it is 100% intentional if the update slows down an older device. They have enough resources to test and optimize the next update for each device, even exclude some features if they decide it will impact performance. This will also be an invitation to upgrade to a newer version, and a lot more subtle one. Doing what they do is a choice and it should have consequences. I hope this lawsuit succeeds and teaches them a lesson. On the other hand the situation with Android is not good, either. My 1st gen Moto G will probably never get Android 6.0 even though it is less than 3 years old and its hardware can run the new version. Gone are the promises of great future support with stock android. Microsoft is also slow to release Windows Phone 10 for older Lumia phones, even if the latest ones have worse specs.

Old phones (by today's terms, old is considered 2 years) are LUCKY to get any iteration of a new OS (Android included).
And w/ the outdated specs on them, of course they'll lag.
