Android has notorious issue with OEMs not updating their devices. However since there's AOSP version, people can fork it to create custom ROMs that, at least, helped some users to stay updated.
Microsoft has done a better job, for sure, in keeping devices updated (with caveats). But then I can simply buy an iPhone and get a firmer OS upgrade path.

Not going to spend more money on WP10 after being burned twice (my WP7, a Nokia, was explicitly dropped from getting WP8 for unknown reason. And I'm not going to wait that long for WP10 to come for my HTC WP8). Burn me twice, shame on me. If I have to wait months for an OS update to reach my device, then it's not much different than Android. Meanwhile, Android's richer ecosystem is more attractive. Yes, there's insider preview. Still, why bother if I can get an iPhone that will be updated on time?
And yes, Google doesn't make apps for WP, and that's a problem. As a consumer, I don't care whose at fault. All I know is if I am a google user and want Windows Phone, I won't be able to use Google services effectively. That's all I care. It's up to Microsoft and Google to sort things out. Meanwhile, MS services are great on the other platforms, including iOS and Android. So, unless I am a total Google hater, using iOS/Android is the best option. iOS will be the best of everything in this regard as it is not only supported by Google and Microsoft, it also gets Apple's services.
Now I'm not saying WP itself is bad. There are many things it does that I like. However, overall, it is not good enough to be the proper alternative of the other 2 giants, iOS and Android. Again, non-google user can probably use WP just fine, but clearly that number is in the minority.

Yes Android is Open Source and Apple is closed source. Does it matter to the ordinary end user? All I care is it's reliability not whether open or close.

Google apps not available because google refused to do it for wp. wp users will receive W10M in this month for certain phones until all the older WP8 devices got it. it might takes time until March this year for all of them get the software update. closed os? not really, because wp much better than the restrictions on ios. wp users can pair bluetooth to any devices unlike ios and can transfer files without any software like itunes. for the apps, W10M brings universal apps for wp and desktop and surely more apps will be coming in.

It has a similar closed garden approach like Apple. (vs Android being available open source and plenty of custom ROM)
Yet it also lack many apps, particularly Google apps.
Worse, MS promise of updating older handsets have been inconsistent (how many WP8 phones are on WP10 now?)
So you have a closed OS, with less apps, and no guarantee in updates. Kinda worst of both worlds.
Having said that, people that has no relation with any Google services can probably use WP just fine. However, that number is clearly pretty low as shown with WP's marketshare so far after years out in the market.

Again, if they are so confident, then put out the sales numbers for the shareholders. Otherwise, it's just a marketing spin (and it's not really "smart" per se, but it is the typical spin for a company to play with language to make it look like they have a successful product).

I tried Windows lumia recently for a couple fo weeks as i had one on loan. Its a lovely looking OS and very smooth but no matter what the fanboys want to tell you the app support is garbage. Yes there are 3rd party apps for some and none for others, the bottom line is though as an overall package the app market is nowhere near good enough. If they were starting 8 or 9 yrs ago it would have a chance of being right up there but it isnt, Its always going to be playing catchup with never quote managing it.
