If they earned that amount of users is because they have to choose between installing messenger just to check your messages or uninstall the facebook app and access from your web browser.
As stated before the App is too heavy, it consumes a lot of RAM and it crashes once that you're phone is out of memory.
They did not earned the users because the app is amazing, it is just because they force everybody to use it.

Why there are people complaining about ram usage and battery life? Mining data from phones 24/7 takes a lot of ram and cpu cicles. You installed it knowing the messenger isn't just a common messenger app tied to Facebook.

The only thing that I need with the name "Messenger" is from Google...which is the app that replaces Hangouts for SMS.

I haven't used FB in over 5 years, it's way too easy to get caught cheating on that thing... Someone tags you in the wrong picture, next thing you know, your girl is ready to cut your member off... but anyways this is still a great achievement. 1 billion is just around the corner.
