Sony creates world's first "48K" 360-degree video by using 12 Xperia Z5 Compact units

07 January, 2016
4K simply isn't enough for Sony anymore. After having launched the world's first smartphone with a display that can sometimes show 4K content (the Xperia Z5 Premium), the company is now aiming even higher. Much more so.

it is cool, but normally people would not do this.

so is this what they meant by saying 48K, 4k x 12 xperia?

      so this is how it goes then, if 3840 × 2160 = 4K. and 3840 x 12 and 2160 x 12.. that would be, 46080 x 25920 = 48K.

dont make us laugh SONY by saying its 48K LOL! you guys just stitched 12 pcs of 4k's so its 4K..

Bigben, 08 Jan 20164k videos stitched still are 4k. Not anything more... nope that is not how it works lol
resolution of screen or image stands for the amount of pixels, literally stitching few images together does make new made image technically higher resolution as each image on its own in this example had 4k resolution and together 12 of them had 12 times of it

It really is just 4k. Where are you gonna watch this '48K' video if the display technology or tv for it don't even exist. The best we can do is watch in in VR headset with Z5 Premium in 4K mode. Very cool video if it is really 48K because over 11K is already able to create the 'window' illusion.

                  AnonD-416078, 07 Jan 2016it's actually 3840 x 12*2160. But what about the capturing ... more(about the resolution number that's exactly what I wrote hehe)

Yep, indeed. if the camera's field of view angle is more than 30° on it's height (original height), then overlapping occurs (and actually it should occur to be eliminated easily and make a smooth curve), making the effective resolution less than the 26K width.

Quite frankly it should just be said as a 360° video and that's it, or call it 3840(something) dunno, they try to make it sound so oooh incredible and stumble up on the naming

(on a side note, no idea why on Youtube and the likes where video is always exclusively progressive, there's that "p" after the height resolution, it's never interleaved anyway (think about 1080i, "i" for "interleaved") so it's just redundant)

I don't know if it youtube's fault, or some issue with compression, but the actual quality is s**t when viewed in 4k. Blurry and stuttery.

You would think that 8K will come after 4K. 3D(pictures)x3D(space) footages do miracles.

AnonD-375713, 07 Jan 2016...4K comes because of the video width which is ALMOST 4 th... moreit's actually 3840 x 12*2160. But what about the capturing angle (I don't know the proper term, I think you get what I mean :P), if the angle is 360/12=30, then you are right, but if it is >30, then the videos (pixels) overlap, so it would be less than 26 K, right?

12 times 4K = 48K :P, I think these videos overlap so it is not exactly 48K. Anyway, instead of 2160p there's 2160s in the options in the youtube player, why is that?
