Because they expect to make more money in the end with the content you'll donwnload for your VR headset (games, movies, whatever).
Because they think more people will choose the S7 over something else just because of this.

What a waste, VR is far from prime time, I mean the screen looked all pixely and ugly, it's like gaming in PS1 or whatever. 1990s welcome back kind of stuff...

I... moreI know that 1080 is pixelly on VR but you don't notice it after a bit of time has passed unless you focus on pixels the entire time. While 4k would be ideal, 2k won't pose a problem even for people with good eyes. This is coming from a person who can see pixels on 5.2 inch 1080 with some concentration.

That's a bad idea. 2.5k pentile is low resolution for VR. It's all pixelated and stuff.
I will never buy into VR unless and until it will reach 4k, at least I would be able to wartch movies -then- without getting increasingly blinded by the terrible pixelation.
