Aside from IBM Simon which was mentioned here before, HTC owned the Windows smartphone space in the very early 2000's (through O2) and also released the very first commercial Android device.
Whereas Windows was trying to bring the Desktop OS to the phone, Apple completely reinvented the experience to suit Mobile. That's the difference.
