New Ulefone handset gets you the Vertu looks on a budget

17 February, 2016
For better, or worse, today's mobile scene is pretty much dominated by the typical "slate" design approach. And while it does have a lot going for it, it is admittedly a bit boring and an interesting take on the form factor is increasingly hard to come by. That being said, we often pick on Vertu for its profoundly elitarian approach to handsets, but we have to give credit, where credit is due and admit that their design language is definitely different and quirky, if not necessarily elegant by all standards.

Luxury, not something I care as much as it's looks and handling (and of course internals, more than these other 2).

I've seen a few reports and videos from the Vertu factory too, not many people are able to appreciate how much effort goes into making one, but it's not a phone for everyone anyway. Once I've heard that they keep all the consumer data in an old World War 2 bunker below the ground. Just because. :-)

So, no rubies or diamonds? No magnesium alloy or titanium built? No gold ot silver sd slot? No laser engraved signature by designers? No luxurious calf leather? No sapphire glass? Then, it is a Vertu on a low budget. I wish I could afford real Vertu.

To create such a great movement using only mechanical parts, that is a part of its charm. Also, Rolex has a VERY good marketing department. That is partly why the brand is so famous. Add a great quality to that. And finally, luxury watches have a superb secondhand value, probably best value of any item.

They have "Rolex Rolex Rolex Rolex Rolex" written all along the inside of their bezels. There's nothing too stunning about them. Just gold. Also, Rolex makes nearly a million watches a year and they aren't exactly a symbol of class, more like a symbol of quick money (used car salesmen showing off). For stunning watches check out Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, A Lange & Sohne etc. Those have hand-finished internals (and sapphire glass back covers so you can see it) unlike Rolex where all is machine-made. A $100 watch can look quite stunning too, remember there are $10 watches around. iPhone is just ugly/inoffensive/common and they are everywhere.
However, a Vertu, as well as Ferrari or Patek Philippe, are rare. You can't see them everywhere, and they are hard to make. That's why they cost a lot. They only make a few thousand a year.

Why do people buy anything? $40k Rolex watches, or $300k Ferraris, they work more or less just like a $100 watch or $20k car. It's a status symbol, just like the Vertu.

The one on the text here is a vertu style phone on an (expected) way lower price. The budged version is the one on the topic here, not anything from Vertu.

On this topic I would say that: finally something less boring coming. Jeez even full touch phones looked cooler at about 2010, there were quite some different looks out there around these times, nowadays it's getting so rare... Good thing is that some saving grace comes every now and then like that Acer Predator gaming phone and this one here, not to mention the original Vertus.
I'm OK with cheaper materials and no leather at all, just mold that plastic the cool way!!
