Snapdragon 652 benchmarked: Cortex-A72 is fast, even on 28nm

17 February, 2016
We have a Samsung Galaxy A9 (2016) for review, which is powered by Qualcomm's mid-range S652 chipset. So, naturally, we pit it against several flagships.

A9 Antutu scores appear to be higher on other websites - maybe you need to re-run the benchmarks??

Reported scores here are very low! on A9 I got, I see Antutu 6 score of 77712 and GFX 3.1 Manhattan (1080p offscreen) of 16FPS. Give a retry on your device and post score.

It's funny how they tuned it down just so it stays in the mid range. But the techies will be able to OC it and it'll run circles around the 810 while using similar amount of power.

I wouldn't set too much store for AnTuTu scores. I'm more interested in the specific tests, and the SD652 is one hell of a midrange SoC. The 28mn fabrication process limits its performance a bit, but at least it doesn't get hot.

AnonD-502377, 17 Feb 2016Redmi Note 3 Pro - Snapdragon 650 in Antutu benchmark score... moreThrottling... A tutu is a silly test anyway, it tests disparate things that are unlikely to be used by the same kinds of peoples...

AnonD-502377, 17 Feb 2016Redmi Note 3 Pro - Snapdragon 650 in Antutu benchmark score... moreAntutu benchmark is overall phone performance. There is no way to benchmark just CPU without hardware. Benchmark checks CPU, GPU, RAM speed, Ram, Sdcard I/O and etc which will surely differ from device to device.

At last, Qualcomm has delivered a good 64-bit chipset. Good for android mid-rangers in 2016. I am really happy to see the results, particularly the non-heating part.

SD 652's Antutu score is a disappointment. After seeing Redmi Note 3 Antutu score which has SD 650 around 78000 points, people would expect 652's score to be 80k+ . But after seeing the score of 64000 it makes me doubt the score of Redmi note 3.

Looks pretty damn good for a midrange. Sadly these phones are about the same price as last year's phones, don't know why you would buy it over the s6 or something.

So is the hiawei chipset more like the midrange snapdragon or more close to the last years sd810.. Anywhere between when it comes to overall performance, still a long way to go huawei

I was wondering why qualcomm never made the sd652 20nm?
Guess what I believe it makes SD 652 more powerful than sd810 .

I think Samsung has reduced performance

Mark my words - Windows phones will be closer to death (or died) by the end of this year. We will be left with only IOS and Android from 2017 onwards. And IOS user base will start shrinking, with Android midrangers (powered by the likes of SD 650 and 652) reducing the extravagant sale of iphones going forward. Android will reach monopoly status with close to 90% market share towards the end of this year or next year.
