Dell Streak 5-inch tablet phone coming soon to O2 UK

25 May, 2010
Where do touch phones end and tablets begin? Well, the 5-inch Dell Streak is certainly bound to push the border further than the HTC HD2 and its 4.3-inch screen. The tablet moniker is actually misleading...

The video really made me change my mind about the device. Its precisely the kind of product that might be a niche right now, but is the future looking 2-3 years down the road. Like he said "perfect in between device"

At least it won't stick out like you have pack of cigarettes in your pocket which plenty of phones do like the iPhone which rounds the edges just people won't understand that it's bulky in the midsection. This one actually seems pretty thin and flat. You do get a sense of the market segment Dell are aiming at.

What I don't understand is why is it coming out with Android 1.6 when 2.2 is already in the works. Bad commercial move.

scoopyscoopy, 26 May 2010I don't agree a device like Dell Streak has no purpose. Wel... moreI agree with you 1000%! In combination with a blue tooth headset this could blow most phones, plus the iPad (only advantage: long battery life), out of the water.

I also think to call the Streak/Mini 5 a "tablet" is misleading because it makes people compare it with devices like iPad and netbooks, which have a different purpose. The Streak/Mini 5 is a PDA, albeit with an unusually large screen: you get the media and business capabilities of a PC/netbook, PLUS the connectivity, telephony and messaging functionality of a phone. The large screen offers convenient reading of documents, ebooks, internet, video, gaming, txting and so on, but (unlike iPad or netbook) is not too big to fit into a purse or handbag. For me, that's a perfect combination.

Too bad that it will be exclusive to O2. Dell is making the same short-sighted mistake as Apple did with the iPhone by going for the network with the biggest wallet, not the one with the best coverage or data capability. Many people held off getting an iPhone until it became available on other networks, and when it did, many people who had moved to O2 to get the iPhone moved back to Vodafone or Orange as fast as they could. Judging from the negative comments here, Dell should try to attract as many customers as possible to the Streak/Mini 5, so by making it exclusive they may have scuppered their chances of it becoming a success.

I am a businessman, so I don't need a device like iPad, it's basically useless. HP Slate is ok but it should has mobile OS rather than Windows 7. I hate the device working slow and not finger friendly.

For Dell Streak, it's perfect. A larger screen and it can pretty much do everything. It's a all in one device not like iPad. No cameras, doesn't do this and that. What a annoying thing?

I mostly use Bluetooth handset, therefore, the size doesn't matter much. But it makes my eyes easier when I go online. Most of the smartphones are quite small to use the web.

imo a tablet shouldn't be something between a netbook and a smartphone, it should be a netbook with a touchscreen (like the ipad or hp slate). a device like the deal streak has no purpose. it's too big to be a phone and too small to succesfully accomplish the tasks a tablet should. if you want superior web browsing, office stuff, watching movies etc. a smartphone + tablet combination is the best solution, not a compromise like the dell streak.

i reckon this more like a phone than a tablet tbh, screen is not big enough for tablet and a lil large for a mobile... maybe a mini tablet..? rather wait for another companies tablet.

For me I think LGs GW990 would have been better... seemed more reasonble. More ram, 1024x480 resolution, probably better camera performance. Larger capacity battery, smaller size, sure only 4.8" screen, but the sized felt more userfriendly.
Well, that one is cancelled, so this inte the only one left in the segment.

O2 data speed is not good, but their fair usage policy is miles higher than that of all the other carriers.
